Read how a small band of survivors worked together to stay alive!
Excerpt from Chapter One:
Owen Grigsby was about to raise his rifle. The black bear was across the snow centered in front of a stand of trees. Like a hunting postcard.
He was moving slow, that delicious and deliberate intention of using a weapon to kill.
Until the cub meandered into the scene. Ruined it for him.
Probably wasn’t legal to shoot the momma bear. But he knew it wasn’t right, so it was a no-go.
He switched from fearless hunter to nature lover and watched the momma and cub nosing around for grub.
Something happened. He couldn’t be sure if he saw it himself or just reacted to the momma bear’s twitch.
He scanned the tree line. For movement. Maybe for a splash of orange. Some hunters just ain’t smart.
Momma bear was in a crouch. The cub was curious, ready to go toward the trees.
Momma bear shooed her away with a rough backhand. The cub got behind her.
A dog came through the trees, above the bears.
No that wasn’t a dog. It was a wolf, but big, like a giant German shepherd fed well.
Momma bear was squared off.
But Grigsby saw it was just a diversion.
Two other wolves, big and healthy appeared on her flanks.
Momma bear backed away. Pushing the cub back.
All she could do was scan, side to side, waiting for the attack.
The cub knew enough to be afraid but not what to do. The whimper did something to the wolves.
Made them mad, and happy at the same time. Way a bully delights when an opponent is scared and about to get whupped.
Momma bear was coming up on hind legs, loosening her arms.
The big specimen standing above her flashed teeth and flexed its shoulders.
The two wolves attacked from the sides, at the same time, crashing into the momma bear with fangs and claw.
She fought. Tossed one aside and bit down on the other’s flank.
Still the wolf above only snarled, watching.
The two wolves retreated and attacked, together and separately as the momma bear fought them from either side.
The snow was getting sprayed with blood. All of the animals were taking wounds.
The wolf above watched as the bear huffed and the wolves growled, each tearing into each other with nothing but murder.
Momma bear was getting the worst of it. These wolves were big, Grigsby was watching and trying to take it in. They did look more like well-fed dogs. There was something about them. They were more muscular and less – well, less sneaky than the normal wolf.
The alpha, bigger than the two fighters was still watching from its perch.
New movement caught Grigsby’s eye.
A large male bear came bounding from the left. Went straight for one of the wolves attacking momma bear.
The alpha’s body rippled into action. He took a leap from his perch and attacked the male’s neck, snarling and ripping into fur.
The male bear reared and batted the alpha away.
All the alpha did was land on its feet and begin stalking the male, left to right and back again.
