Acerca de esta escucha

And So We Walked is a frank, heartwarming, and inspiring story about a contemporary Cherokee woman and her father who embark on an incredible 900-mile journey along the Trail of Tears to truly understand her own identity and the conflicts of her nation. The play recounts the six-week journey, which retraced the path her great-great-grandparents took in the 1830s during the forced relocation of 17,000 Cherokee from their homelands. And So We Walked is a powerful, multifaceted dramatic memoir that draws on extraordinary interviews, historical research, and the artist’s personal experience to convey the complexities and conflicts with which the Cherokee wrestle.

Try it out- It's a new experience.

First, for expectations: it's important to note that this is NOT a book- it is a live recording of a one-woman play. (New for me on Audible, and I'm here for it.)

Second, this is a powerful and necessary story. For Natives, you'll get it. For those of mixed heritage, it might be healing and/or empowering. For non-Natives, I deeply encourage you to check out this play. It's incredibly informative and impactful. I trust that, if you're open to the experience, you will be moved, curious, and find a new appreciation for Native experiences.

Lastly, DeLanna: ᏩᏙ.

I don’t usually go for this type of performance as audio, but This was very well done. The story had a lot of layers. Enjoyable and thoughtful listen.

Excellent!!

I have often wondered about the Trail of Tears. I lived in Cleveland TN and had visited the Cherokee cabins, also taking my children there to see the real history.
It is a miracle that the cabins are still there and have not been destroyed like so many things in America's history!!

A Very Moving Book

This short book offers an interesting perspective on the Trail of Tears and its continuing impact on the Cherokee today as a Cherokee woman and her father take six weeks to retrace the trail, interviewing Cherokee along the way. It’s a very emotional account and aptly demonstrates how a government-sanctioned crime nearly two hundred years ago is still being felt in the twenty-first century.

I was surprised that the author thinks that the Trail of Tears and the surrounding events are not broadly known today. Perhaps they aren’t, but I first heard about it in elementary school some 45 years ago along with Andrew Jackson’s decision to ignore a Supreme Court order and force the Cherokee off their lands. What I found much more informative were the glimpses into modern Cherokee life and the experiences of many Cherokee. One tends to think of events this far in the past as “in the past” but the damage done by the United States’ “Indian Policy” continue to be felt including the Dawes Act and efforts to force young Cherokee children to give up their culture.

It's a very moving book.
