Acerca de esta escucha
Are you interested in the history of one of the most isolated kingdoms on Earth? Then this audiobook is for you!
When most people hear the phrase “ancient Hawaii”, it brings up a certain air of mystery and intrigue. Some might think of tattooed tribesmen sailing across the vast emptiness of the Pacific Ocean under the moonlight, dancing around campfires to connect with their gods, or living on the sides of volcanos. But is this an accurate depiction? Or is there more to the early people of Hawaii?
This is the story of the far-flung nation in the heart of the Pacific Ocean. We will take a trip back in time and explore how such a remote island became inhabited over 1,500 years ago and what life was like back then in this tropical wonderland.
The journey begins all the way back around 400 CE, and we will sail through the years up until the turn of the 19th century. You will dip and dive through Hawaii’s captivating ups and downs, its stories of peace and prosperity, and the bloody conflicts that ran the rivers red.
The story of ancient Hawaii is perhaps far more profound and far more interesting than most give it credit for. In this audiobook, you will discover:
- How the Polynesians were able to travel across 2,500 miles of ocean to find the Hawaiian Islands
- How these settlers set up their civilization and began to thrive in paradise
- How the islands were organized and how the people spent their days
- The mythology behind the beliefs that drove Hawaii’s society
- A white-knuckle ride into some of the most brutal conflicts fought in the name of unity and peace
- Insights into the leaders, heroes, and legends of Hawaii’s past
- The tale of how ancient Hawaiian society fell in with the modern Western world
When you are ready to start your own adventure, buy this audiobook and brace yourself for the history lesson of a lifetime!

Historia
The Hawaiian kingdom was tiny, and the big world was huge. The 19th century was the high water mark of Western imperialism, worldwide, and the great powers were planting their flags across the Pacific. Hawai'i was in their sights. By late in the century, two strong American currents were running: one east from the islands, one west from the continent. Sugar plantations had become Hawai'i's biggest moneymaker. And many of the biggest names in the business were of American blood - the sons of missionaries, devout capitalists.

In 1897, as a White oligarchy made plans to allow the United States to annex Hawai'i, native Hawaiians organized a massive petition drive to protest. Ninety-five percent of the native population signed the petition, causing the annexation treaty to fail in the US Senate. This event was unknown to many contemporary Hawaiians until Noenoe K. Silva rediscovered the petition in the process of researching this book. With few exceptions, histories of Hawai'i have been based exclusively on English-language sources.

Historia
Traditionally, Americans learned in school that the ancestors of the people who inhabited the Western Hemisphere at the time of Columbus' landing had crossed the Bering Strait 12,000 years ago; existed mainly in small nomadic bands; and lived so lightly on the land that the Americas were, for all practical purposes, still a vast wilderness. But as Charles C. Mann now makes clear, archaeologists and anthropologists have spent the last 30 years proving these and many other long-held assumptions wrong.

In this sweeping, enthralling biography, acclaimed historian David Hackett Fischer brings to life the remarkable Samuel de Champlain - soldier, spy, master mariner, explorer, cartographer, artist, and Father of New France. We remember Champlain mainly as a great explorer. On foot and by ship and canoe, he traveled through what are now six Canadian provinces and five American states. Over more than 30 years he founded, colonized, and administered French settlements in North America.

Three years ago, a Carnelian bead came into Catrine Jarman's temporary possession. River Kings sees her trace the path of this ancient piece of jewelry back to eighth-century Baghdad and India, discovering along the way that the Vikings' route was far more varied than we might think—that with them came people from the Middle East, and that the reason for this unexpected integration between the Eastern and Western worlds may well have been a slave trade running through the Silk Road, all the way to Britain.

Beyond its charm, quaint local traditions, and whaling yarns, Philbrick explores the origins of Nantucket in this comprehensive history. From the English settlers who thought they were purchasing a "Native American ghost town" but actually found a fully realized society, the story of Nantucket is a truly unique chapter of American history.

The Sumerians settled in the area known as Mesopotamia, between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, around 5,000 years ago. They produced many fundamental changes to the way in which human societies developed - these were the first city-builders, the first people to use wheeled vehicles, the first methodical astronomers, and the first people to develop a sophisticated written language. The Sumerians also produced art, music, and literature as well as created some of the first professional soldiers the world had ever seen.

Meriwether Lewis discovered far more than the history books tell - ancient civilizations, strange monuments, "nearly white, blue-eyed" Indians, and evidence that the American continent was visited long before the first European settlers arrived. And he was murdered to keep it all secret. Examining the shadows and cracks between America's official version of history, Xaviant Haze and Paul Schrag propose that the America of old taught in schools is not the America that was discovered by Lewis and Clark and other early explorers.

The most recent state to join the union, Hawaii is the only one to have once been a royal kingdom. After its discovery by Captain Cook in the late 18th century, Hawaii was fought over by European powers determined to take advantage of its position as the crossroads of the Pacific. The arrival of the first missionaries marked the beginning of the struggle between a native culture with its ancient gods, sexual libertinism, and rites of human sacrifice and the rigid values of the Calvinists.

A very interesting book and history. I enjoyed much of the book but thought the reader needed more education in pronunciation of Hawaiian words. Some he did quite well but many seemed didn’t quite make it right as far as proper pronunciations of the vowels and some consonants.

It was a good general overview..
This book felt like more of an overview, like bullet points and outline. I’m not going to call it bad, I would say it’s more of an introduction to Hawaiian history. If you want to get the full story, you will need to build in this or find something else.

A must read for any visitors to Hawaii
I am a white mainlander with prior little to no knowledge of the ancient history of Hawaii. I greatly appreciated this book for providing a background for the people and land of ancient Hawaii. My only criticism is curiosity about collaboration with native Hawaiians while writing this book. Any future learning I seek on the topic will preferably be from a native’s voice. However, a must read for any tourist to gain appreciation and proper respect as a visitor to these complex islands.

Hawaii the perfect vacation spot
Loved reading this book. Shortly after I finished my one year tour in Vietnam, I was reassigned to Hawaii for my last 5 months of service in 1970. It was truly beautiful, especially since while leave I married high school girlfriend and was able to take her too Hawaii for our honeymoon. It was great to learn it's history... and upon reading this book I've learned so much more of this amazing state.

A Rich Cultural history
While I wasn’t too fond of the narrator (his voice felt too soothing for lack of a better word), it was very informative. I always marveled how Hawaiians managed to maintain their culture overtime whereas most civilizations a lot is lost to history.
And once again regret I wasn’t born into a such a rich cultural heritage!
