Emma Goldman
Acerca de esta escucha
Among the men and women prominent in the public life of early 20th-century America there are but few whose names are mentioned as often as that of Emma Goldman. Yet the real Emma Goldman is almost quite unknown. The sensational press has surrounded her name with so much misrepresentation and slander, it would seem almost a miracle that, in spite of this web of calumny, the truth breaks through and a better appreciation of this much maligned idealist begins to manifest itself. Here are powerful, penetrating, prophetic essays on direct action, the role of minorities, prison reform, puritan hypocrisy, and violence.

Anarchism has been both a vision of a peaceful, cooperative society — and an ideology of revolutionary terror. Since the term itself — anarchism — is a negation, there is a great deal of disagreement on what the positive alternative would look like. The black flag comes in many colors.

In The Conquest of Bread, first published in 1892, Kropotkin set out his ideas on how his heightened idealism could work. It was all the more extraordinary because he was born into an aristocratic land-owning family - with some 1,200 male serfs - though from his student years his liberal views and his fixation on the need for social change saw him take a revolutionary path. This led rapidly to decades of exile. It is a passionate, even a fierce polemic for dramatic social change.

Historia
On Anarchism provides the reasoning behind Noam Chomsky's fearless lifelong questioning of the legitimacy of entrenched power. In these essays, Chomsky redeems one of the most maligned ideologies, anarchism, and places it at the foundation of his political thinking. Chomsky's anarchism is distinctly optimistic and egalitarian. Moreover, it is a living, evolving tradition that is situated in a historical lineage; Chomsky's anarchism emphasizes the power of collective, rather than individualist, action.

Historia
Pyotr Kropotkin (1842-1921), one of the most individual political figures of his time, is best known as an influential anarchist communist. But he was also a scientist, geographer and philosopher, a man who, having grown up on his aristocratic father’s extensive country estate in Russia, had a deep understanding of and love for animals (wild and domesticated), the countryside and wildernesses. And all this was underpinned by a life committed to work for the good of humanity.

What is nature? What is humanity's place in nature? And what is the relationship of society to the natural world? In an era of ecological breakdown, answering these questions has become of momentous importance for our everyday lives and for the future that we and other life-forms face. In the essays of The Philosophy of Social Ecology, Murray Bookchin confronts these questions head on, invoking the ideas of mutualism, self-organization, and unity in diversity, in the service of ever-expanding freedom.

Historia
This rather incoherent work by Russian anarchist philosopher Michael Bakunin is described in a way that he described his own life: a fragment. Rife with criticisms on Christianity and the technocracy, Bakunin presses communist values without fear of bordering extremism. Listening to this work is like walking through Bakunin’s disjointed mind; often cutting off and starting mid-sentence, including footnotes several paragraphs long as if his thoughts suddenly start to wander, as well as ending rather abruptly mid-sentence.

Historia
"Anarchy" (1907) is a political classic written by famous anarchist Errico Malatesta. "Anarchy is a word which comes from the Greek, and signifies, strictly speaking, without government: the state of a people without any constituted authority. Before such an organization had begun to be considered possible and desirable by a whole class of thinkers, so as to be taken as the aim of a party (which party has now become one of the most important factors in modern social warfare)."

Blackshirts and Reds explores some of the big issues of our time: fascism, capitalism, communism, revolution, democracy, and ecology. These terms are often bandied about but seldom explored in the original and exciting way that has become Michael Parenti's trademark. Parenti shows how "rational fascism" renders service to capitalism, how corporate power undermines democracy, and how revolutions are a mass empowerment against the forces of exploitative privilege.

Historia
State and Revolution (1917) describes the role of the state in society, the necessity of proletarian revolution, and the theoretic inadequacies of social democracy in achieving revolution. It describes the inherent nature of the state as a tool for class oppression, a creation born of one social class' desire to control all other social classes. Whether a dictatorship or a democracy, the state remains in the control of the ruling class.

In this pathbreaking work, now with a new introduction, Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky show that, contrary to the usual image of the news media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and defense of justice, in their actual practice they defend the economic, social, and political agendas of the privileged groups that dominate domestic society, the state, and the global order.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s account of the first successful large-scale application of nonviolent resistance in America is comprehensive, revelatory, and intimate. King described his book as "the chronicle of 50,000 Negroes who took to heart the principles of nonviolence, who learned to fight for their rights with the weapon of love, and who, in the process, acquired a new estimate of their own human worth."

How do politics shape our world, our lives, and our perceptions? How much of “common sense” is actually driven by the ruling class’ needs and interests? And how are we to challenge the capitalist structures that now threaten all life on the planet? Consequences of Capitalism exposes the deep, often unseen, connections between neoliberal “common sense” and structural power. In making these linkages, we see how the current hegemony keeps social justice movements divided and marginalized. And, most importantly, we see how we can fight to overcome these divisions.

You are possessed. A being outside yourself has taken control of your mind, body, and soul. It commands you to do things against your will, and torments you with feelings of guilt and pain. This being is not a demon, or a ghost, though it might as well be. This being is an ideal. Your ideals, whether thrust upon you by society or adopted out of a sense of duty, your ideals put you in bondage and make your life miserable. They haunt your head, as sure as any spook could do.

Reseñas editoriales
In the early 19th century, anarchist Emma Goldman was described as "the most dangerous woman in America". Her radical thought still seems highly contemporary in this audiobook, as she explores social and personal problems that are conspicuous today.
Suzanne Toren captures the politics and opinions of this seminal thinker like a powerful orator at a podium. Her bold and impeccable delivery is a fitting match for the substance of Anarchism and Other Essays, an accessible book that was clearly ahead of its time. The performance opens with an illuminating biographical sketch of Goldman and then proceeds to express Goldman's opinions on everything from imprisonment to prostitution.

In these essays, Chomsky redeems one of the most maligned ideologies, anarchism, and places it at the foundation of his political thinking. Historia
Emma Goldman (1869 – 1940) was an anarchist political activist and writer. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century. In this essay, (1910) Goldman sets forth her interpretation of the ideology of anarchism. Like most anarchists, she was highly idealistic; believing that human nature was inherently good, she was convinced that a state of absolute freedom would maximize human happiness and productivity.

But at the root of this mythology is a rich history of pirate societies—vibrant, imaginative experiments in self-governance and alternative social formations at the edges of the European empire.

Historia
The Emma Goldman Collection features over 300 letters, primarily written by Emma Goldman, although other anarchists, activists and thinkers are represented as authors. The collection includes typescript drafts of articles and letters by anarchists, publications, press releases, and ephemera. Many of the letter recipients are unnamed (as "Comrade") but the majority of the letters were directed to Thomas H. Keell, compositor and editor for the anarchist periodical Freedom.

Anarchism has been both a vision of a peaceful, cooperative society — and an ideology of revolutionary terror. Since the term itself — anarchism — is a negation, there is a great deal of disagreement on what the positive alternative would look like. The black flag comes in many colors.

It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism. After 1989, capitalism has successfully presented itself as the only realistic political-economic system–a situation that the bank crisis of 2008, far from ending, actually compounded. The book analyses the development and principal features of this capitalist realism as a lived ideological framework.

Twenty-five years ago, when Pat Robertson and other televangelists first spoke of the United States being a Christian nation that would build a global Christian empire, it was hard to take such hyperbolic rhetoric seriously. Today, such language no longer sounds like hyperbole but poses, instead, a very real threat to our freedoms and our way of life.

A bit dramatic
Interesting selection of her works. Reader added a bit of a lively holier-than-thou tone.

Emma Goldman was a hero!
Anarchism and Other Essays is a truly epochal text. It laid the foundations for Anarchs-Feminism and influenced countless 20th century and contemporary Anarchists! A must read for any self respecting Leftist and/or Feminist!

The narration is crazy spectacular
It really delivers on an anarchist perspective. It's facinating to see how far we've come and how much further we have to go.

Enlightening
Amazing how relevant Goldman’s essays written so long ago are today. Definitely recommend this book to those on both sides of the political spectrum. Even if you do not agree with everything, challenge yourself to understand the important issues described in this book.

Critical reading for today's world
Written in 1910, every bit of the knowledge that Goldman sought and disseminated here is painfully relevant today. Anarchism, as Goldman said elsewhere, will always prevail in the human spirit because it touches the underlying truths of capitalism, government, and authority. Despite smear tactics from the state and capitalist media, despite the important but controversial tactics of cultural anarchists and the blackbloc, one also comes to the believe that anarchism also touches on the fundamental truths of humanity.
I highly recommend this book to any who wishes to emancipate themselves from the compact masses of droning capitalist cannon fodder.

defining article on anarchism in US a century ago
Loved it! I read it in a philosophy class in college. I just listened to it. I still find it so inspirational. I highly recommend this book.

Preaching to the choir
I was expecting (and hoping) for something more dry and explanatory. This feels like prose poetry. It is very well written, and interesting, but it gives the energy of preaching to the choir.
I wasn't expecting to be converted to anarchism, but I don't even feel like I have a deeper understanding of anarchist philosophy. Not that the essays are not deep and complex, but that they have already been condensed and spread for so many years that it no longer feels radical or profound, which it may well have been at the time it was written.
I recommend this book as an interesting historical text, or well written prose poetry, but not to learn anarchist philosophy unless one knows nothing about it already.
I am disappointed in the tirade against the "vulgar masses" not having any taste in art or appreciation of anything of moral beauty. The critic of monetary value not being the same as artistic quality is valid, condemning the mob for following trends may be worthwhile argument in a context, but degrading popular art for being popular feels very conceited.
I do enjoy the savage lampooning of the police.
"Every society has the criminals it deserves"
Ahead of her time example of second-wave feminism, explained well.

Some Dated Ideals
Some of the ideals of the differences between men and women's roles in society, i.e. women's suffrage and there place in the home and as childbearers, were quite outdated. The same goes for the way marriage was perceived back then. I feel that these two topics of the book may have been accurate for the time that emma goldman wrote them, but no longer apply directly to our society. There was not much memorable discussion on anarchism, but fairly accurate and well said. Not a bad book to listen to during the workday.
