American Brujeria is about the fascinating blend of American and Mexican folk magic currently used by those living in the US but whose roots are steeped in Mexican culture. This type of Mexican American folk magic, which the author calls “American brujeria”, features its own unique saints and spirits as well as familiar ones, such as the infamous Santa Muerte. American Brujeria includes stories from Mexico (folk saints, the story of Guadalupe), the influence of Catholicism, the art of limpias (traditional folk healing methods), spell casting, oil crafting, praying the rosary (in English and Spanish), making an altar to Guadalupe, using novena candle magic, making protective charms from saints’ medals, and more. There’s even a whole section on creative uses for Vicks VapoRub, a staple in Mexican American folk healing. American brujeria is extremely close to conjure traditions of the American South and, in fact, shares a lot of crossover, demonstrating how these traditions have influenced one another.

loved this book!

I'm already on my second read through. as a white washed Chicana I have always felt disconnected with my heritage and spirituality this was such a therapeutic read. Please read this with an open mind and take what you can. the use of "Latinx" may be controversial but I feel like the author used it for inclusivity of people like myself who have both Spanish and Mexican ancestry.

a great resource an introduction to brujeria

I very much enjoyed this book. it was user friendly, well organized and accessible without being overly simplistic. the author mixed historical uses along with modern needs for Mexican-American practitioners.

Great information, needs a accompanying PDF

Great listen over all with very useful information for “American” working. For me it had a lot of resemblances to Espiritismo cruzado practiced in the Caribbean. My only suggestion would be to include a PDF with and over view of prayers, working and herbs and candles information for quick reference.

I want to say I loved it awesome book a lot of it reminds me when I was little cause my mother did a lot of the stuff that’s said I’m the book . I took lots of notes and these wi help with what ever situation I’m in as long as you have faith .

Perfect Reference for Cultural Reconnect

I felt that American Brujeria was the perfect thing to help me get reconnected to my cultural heritage, despite being a 7th generation Mexican-American with a white father. I'm very white passing and most people don't believe me when I tell them that I am Mexican-American as well. in the past, this has held me back from exploring that part of my spirituality because I didn't think that I fit in enough to be allowed. however, the introduction itself just made me feel so whole and, admittedly, I did cry reading it. I'm really thankful for this book as it's really helped me jump start the reconnection within myself. so, thank you J. Allen Cross. thank you.
