Historia
Wilhelmina Brewster has been a college music professor for 41 years, devoting her life to her career and never marrying. Widower Mike Dolan is a pilot and World War II veteran who has always lived life to the fullest. When medical tests confirm that his cancer has returned, he makes plans to take a final flight in his airplane rather than become a burden to his family. Wilhelmina accidentally learns of Mike’s final plans, and when she discovers that he isn’t a believer, she knows it’s her Christian duty to talk with him about her faith. But she feels totally inadequate for the task.

Five-time Christy Award winner Lynn Austin is acclaimed as “one of the genre’s best historical fiction novelists” ( Library Journal). Set in Brooklyn, New York, during World War II, While We’re Far Apart is a brilliant blend of captivating characters, heart-tugging emotions, and vivid spiritual truths. "Thank goodness you're such a plain child. You'll have to rely on your wits." So went the words of Grandma Bebe. And for all of my growing-up years, I scoffed at the beauty of my sister and what I saw as her meaningless existence. But my wits hadn't served me well in this instance, for here I was, in jail. And while I could have seen it as carrying on the family tradition (Grandma Bebe landed in jail for her support of Prohibition), the truth is, my reasons for being here would probably break her heart."

By the time Wendy Lawless turned 17, she'd known for quite some time that she didn't have a normal mother. But that didn't stop her from wanting one.... Georgann Rea didn't bake cookies or go to PTA meetings; she wore a mink coat and always had a lit Dunhill plugged into her cigarette holder. She went through men like Kleenex, and didn't like dogs or children. Georgann had the ice queen beauty of a Hitchcock heroine and the cold heart to match.

Multi-generational story
The stories go back and forth between generations with details that are necessary for the ending. it carries the Christian theme woven throughout the telling without preaching. The story opens you up to the tragic decisions that can occur in life and the opposite redeeming decisions that are possible. It kept my interest but not of the kind where I couldn't put it down.

Another Lynn Austin winner! She can write the most interesting, engaging historical fiction of anyone I've come across. The narration makes one feel like the characters are real, and we are the voyeurs of their lives. I especially liked that Austin was not heavy-handed on the Christian theme with this one.
