I love Joe and Jim working together. I'm anxious to see how Jim's love life turns out and the following books.

Totally Engaging

Best yet in the Hillerman series! The weave of Navaho culture throughout along with its expression of connection to the landscape and Hillerman’s ability to convey a lot with spare prose held this reader in rapt attention throughout!

Anthropology theme

The story was gripping. We learned more about Leaphorn and Chee as their paths cross again.

Good story, narration a mess

The story was good, but the sound quality was so poor it was a challenge to understand at points. The narrator sounded like he had a mouth full of marbles.

Great plot line

But audio muffled for much of the book. Hard to listen to. I really hate these minimum word requirements. Makes me not want to bother leaving a review I’ve said what I wanted to say!

Very good story, excellent narration, but kind of short, as are many of Hillerman's. On to the next in the series.

Tony Hillerman the Best

Great , story, premise, flow, characters, history and background. Leaphorn ‘s grief. Jim Chee’s grief and awkwardness with women.

Excellent story, oddly muddled audio.

I’ve read and listened to all of the Leaphorn-Chee novels. This is probably my favorite one. It’s extremely well crafted as a mystery, but it’s also filled with some very relatable personal interest storylines. It’s a very satisfying novel.
Unfortunately, the audiobook is spoiled by an unusual muddiness to the narration. The normally excellent narration by George Guidel, one of the best in the business, is spoiled by bad electronics or bad copying or a faulty microphone, or something. Especially at the beginning, the narrator sounds like he’s suffering with bronchitis or pneumonia; but since it’s unlikely he’d be required to work while sick, I figure the problem is with the recording, not Mr Guidel.
Nevertheless, this audiobook deserves 5 stars.

Outstanding

Another fascinating and spellbinding book from Hillerman. As always, George Guidall is a superb narrator.
