1984, le récit glaçant d'un monde totalitaire
L'histoire se passe en 1984 à Londres, dans un monde divisé en trois blocs : l'Océania, l'Eurasia et l'Estasia. Ces puissances se combattent les unes les autres depuis les guerres nucléaires des années 1950, tout en imposant à leurs populations des régimes totalitaires. Winston Smith vit à Londres, en Océania, et travaille comme archiviste. Mais son métier est particulier : il est chargé de remanier les archives historiques pour que le passé corresponde à la version officielle du Parti. Lorsque son bloc déclare la guerre à l'Estasia, alors que cette puissance était son alliée deux jours avant, Smith doit faire disparaître toute trace écrite de cette alliance. Cependant, l'employé ministériel cherche en secret à rétablir la vérité pour les générations futures. Avec l'aide de Julia, une jeune femme elle aussi rebelle, il tente de mettre en place une révolution.
Un roman critique et politique
Publié en pleine guerre froide, George Orwell dénonce dans ce roman les ravages des régimes totalitaires. Dans 1984, même les pensées les plus intimes sont surveillées par l'État tout-puissant, symbolisé par Big Brother. "Big Brother is watching you" est devenu la métaphore du régime policier et despotique, sans aucune liberté d'expression.
Les références au stalinisme et au nazisme n'y sont pas fortuites : homme de gauche, Orwell critique à la fois les extrêmes du communisme et déviances du capitalisme. Bien que rédigé au milieu du XXe siècle, 1984 décrit les dangers du monde moderne, l'utilisation des technologies de surveillance, la destruction de la langue ou encore la falsification des archives historiques.
Une dystopie à la réalité retentissante
Souvent qualifié de visionnaire, Orwell meurt un an après la parution de 1984, en pleine guerre froide. Son roman est d'abord reçu comme un livre de science-fiction, prédisant ce qui arriverait si l'on ne luttait pas contre le totalitarisme. Cette œuvre dystopique connaît encore aujourd'hui un succès international, en écho aux terreurs des populations face aux totalitarismes en tout genre. Le livre a été adapté à de nombreuses reprises au cinéma et à la télévision, au théâtre et même en bande dessinée.

Un classique
Ce livre est un classique que je n'avais jamais lu. C'était une bonne histoire, mais j'ai été un peu déçue par le manque d'action. J'aurais aimé une fin différente. Cependant, ce livre est très bien lu. Ce fut tout de même agréable à écouter.

Un grand roman qui vieillit assez bien.
Excellente lecture. Le lecteur réussit à nous faire entrer dans la tête de Smith. L'auteur réussi bien à nous démontrer l'adéquation entre totalitarisme (extrémisme) et abruptissement.

What did you love best about 1984?
I read this book years ago. Just now listened to the narration and found it extraordinary. It's apropos to current events.

Excellent narration, great story, not easy French.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I've read a number of novels in French but it's not my native language. I thought this would be a good first French audiobook because of the relatively simple story. I misremembered how subtle the story really is. I'm alternating listening to a chapter of the English version, and then a chapter of this version. Very enjoyable that way.
What was one of the most memorable moments of 1984?
The first "hatred" scene. So much scarier than the teenage me remembered--especially after listening to some WWII history, including the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.
Any additional comments?
Please offer more classics in French--English-language as well as French literature. As of now the choice is pretty limited, but my guess French and Spanish are the two most popular second languages (acquired, at least) for Anglophones.
