L'azione si svolge in un futuro prossimo del mondo (l'anno 1984) in cui il potere si concentra in tre immensi superstati: Oceania, Eurasia ed Estasia. Al vertice del potere politico in Oceania c'è il Grande Fratello, onnisciente e infallibile, che nessuno ha visto di persona ma di cui ovunque sono visibili grandi manifesti.
Il Ministero della Verità, nel quale lavora il personaggio principale, Smith, ha il compito di censurare libri e giornali non in linea con la politica ufficiale, di alterare la storia e di ridurre le possibilità espressive della lingua.
Per quanto sia tenuto sotto controllo da telecamere, Smith comincia a condurre un'esistenza "sovversiva". Scritto nel 1949, il libro è considerato una delle più lucide rappresentazioni del totalitarismo.
1984 descrive un mondo in perenne conflitto, diviso in tre superpotenze totalitarie: Oceania, Eurasia ed Estasia. Nella prima, dove la storia è ambientata, e più precisamente nella sua capitale, Londra, a dominare è un partito guidato da un leader supremo, idealizzato, onnisciente e infallibile, chiamato Grande Fratello.
I suoi obiettivi: estremizzare i valori socialisti, al punto da annientare ogni libertà, controllando tutti e tutto non solo mediante telecamere disposte in ogni casa, strada e ufficio, ma attraverso il controllo mentale operato dalla psicopolizia, che in ogni luogo diffonde le sue spie.
Censura, diffusione di analfabetismo e ignoranza estesa alle masse, destinate all'obbedienza: in tutto questo vi è ancora qualcuno deciso ad alzare la testa, a distinguersi dagli altri e contrastare con ogni mezzo il sistema in cui si trova, suo malgrado, a vivere.
Questo quanto si propone di fare il protagonista di questa storia, Winston Smith, un impiegato del Ministero della Verità che si unisce all'prganizzazione segreta della Confraternita.
Ma, in un sistema in cui a dominare sono corruzione e avidità, può un esiguo manipolo di ribelli sovvertire l'organizzazione sociale? Scritto nel 1949, il libro è considerato una delle più lucide rappresentazioni del totalitarismo, un caposaldo della letteratura distopica.
