Acerca de esta escucha
Eddie Cantrell, now married to the king of Denmark’s daughter, is sent by Admiral Simpson to the Caribbean to secure access to the most valuable commodity on that continent - not the gold and silver which the Spanish treasure, but the oil which up-time machines and industry need. The admiral has also provided Eddie’s small task force with the new steam-powered frigates that have just come out of the navy’s shipyards. Even with the frigates, a giant obstacle stands in his way: the Gulf-girdling Spanish presence in the New World. So a diversion is needed, carried out by an up-time car mechanic and a down-time mercenary colonel who also happens to be the last earl of Ireland. Their mission: grab the oil fields on Trinidad, and so distract the attention of Spain’s New World governors. While the Spanish galleons and troops head for Trinidad, Commander Cantrell’s smallest and fastest steam sloop will make a run to the Louisiana coast. There, her crew will wind their way up the bayous to the real New World prize: the Jennings Oil Field. But Cantrell’s plans could be wrecked in a multitude of ways. He faces often-hostile natives, rambunctious Dutch ship captains, allied colonies on the brink of starvation, and vicious social infighting that can barely be contained by his capable and passionate new wife. When the galleons finally come out in force to engage his small flotilla, Eddie will discover that the Spanish aren’t the only enemies who will be coming against him in a fateful Caribbean show-down.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Eric Flint has received glowing critical praise for his Ring of Fire alternate history series. In this first installment, a West Virginia town is transported from the year 2000 to 1631 Germany at the height of the Thirty Years’ War. Thrust into conflict, the town residents must also contend with moral issues such as who should be considered a citizen.

A cosmic accident sets the modern town of Grantville, West Virginia, down in war-torn 17th-century Europe and a new nation is forged. Now when United States of Europe ally King Gustavas of Sweden invades Poland, the U.S. of E. is dragged into a full-scale European war against ruthless opponents. Meanwhile Mike Stearns, wily and courageous leader of the up-time West Virginians, has been turned out of office in an election. But, like Churchill (before and after him) Stearns is not done yet.

A mysterious cosmic force the Ring of Fire has hurled the town of Grantville from 20th century West Virginia back to 17th century Europe, and into the heart of the Thirty Years War. With their seemingly magical technology, and their radical ideas of freedom and justice, the time-lost West Virginians have allied with Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden, to form the Confederated Principalities of Europe, changing the course of history in ways both small and large.

Historia
In the year 1635, the Rhineland is in turmoil. The impact of the Ring of Fire, the cosmic accident which transported the small modern West Virginia town of Grantville to Europe in the early 17th century, has only aggravated a situation that was already chaotic. Perhaps nowhere in central Europe did the Thirty Years' War produce so much upheaval as it did in the borderlands between France and Germany. Archbishop Ferdinand of Cologne shares the religious fanaticism of his older brother, Duke Maximilian of Bavaria.

Twice before, mysterious cosmic catastrophes have sent portions of the Earth across space and back in time - first, with the Grantville Disaster in West Virginia, and then again with a maximum security prison in southern Illinois. Now, the planet is struck with yet another such cataclysm, whose direct impact falls upon the Queen of the Sea, a cruise ship in the Caribbean. When the convulsions subside, the crew and passengers of the ship discover that they have arrived in a new and frightening world. They are in the Mediterranean now, not the Caribbean.

In this alternate history of the American frontier and the Jacksonian era, a small change takes place in the Battle of the Horseshoe Bend during the War of 1812. What results is a cascade of new developments that becomes an avalanche. In our world, Ensign Sam Houston, just turned 21, led the charge on the creek barricade in that battle and almost died from a terrible wound that took him a year to recover from. In this world, his wound is minor, so he is able to continue fighting the British—and develop his close relationship with Andrew Jackson much sooner.

There he was in his sailboat in the middle of the Atlantic, all alone and loving it. Well, there was a US Navy carrier group on his southern horizon, but he was a Navy guy himself, so he didn't mind. Then came the UFOs, hurtling in from the Outer Black to overfly the carriers at Mach 17. Their impossible aerobatics were bad enough—but then they started shooting at each other, and at the Navy, with nukes. Little ones at first, but winding up with a 500 megatonner at 90 miles that fried every piece of electronics within line-of-sight.

When the Ring of Fire drags Grantville, West Virginia, back to seventeenth-century Germany, down-time veteran Edgar Neustatter finds himself among the survivors of a unit devastated by the up-time Americans and their Swedish allies. After wintering in Grantville, they return home to find that while they have changed, their village has not. Having glimpsed the promise of a republic ruled by its people rather than lords and tyrants, Neustatter leads his men and their families back to Grantville to establish a new agency: Neustatter's European Security Services.

Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

Great story!
I really liked this book. I found it as enjoyable as any Hornblower book I ever read. As always, the characters are multi-dimensional, and my favorite couple, Eddie Cantrell and his voluptuous bride, Anne Catherine, are always a delight. Highly recommended!

Heir to 1634
What made the experience of listening to 1636 the most enjoyable?
How the author tied in some of the characters and events from the Baltic War and some of the offshoots from the Italian series (love the Wild Geese). 1636 Kremlin Games was listed as the next Ring of Fire book after the Baltic War, but I'd say this one should be considered the logical book to fill that role, along with the three books in the Italian saga. I'd add I haven't read/listened to some other offshoots like the Ram Rebellion, Bavarian Gambit, Devil's Opera, etc.
What other book might you compare 1636 to and why?
Baltic War and the Galileo Affair, as it has some of those intrigues and characters brought together. Plus, some actual big battles.
What about George Guidall’s performance did you like?
Wonderful. One of my favorite narrators.
Any additional comments?
I don't know if the written version has maps and reference material, but half the time I listen to a Ring of Fire book I need one available to visualize a place, or a real person and their actual history, and the tech (such as the difference between Dutch and Spanish fighting ships of the 1600s).

Must be all the Star Trek I grew up on. The novel continues the promotion of ham radio, gun play and steampunkish goodness you'd expect from the 1632 series.

More, and more detailed Grantville adventures
Any additional comments?
Found this a very satisfying read/escape. The amount of historical detail and sheer volume of historical, as well as foreign names forced me to absorb the book at a much higher level than is normal for me. This allowed for an enjoyably easy read and produced the much sought after "Zen" mode while listening. May be a bit much if you need to follow every plot twist and character, but it works great for me! Can see myself rereading this in the future, something I never do!

Ahoy!!
Before I get started on this book, I first have to say I love this series. That being said, I don't think I've wanted to read another book in this series as much as I want to read the sequel to this one. I couldn't stop listening. I listened to this book in one sitting, and I didn't want it to end. The adventures of Eddie Cantrell are truly fascinating, and I love the imagery that Flint and Gannon put into this book. They have done to the Caribbean and the Spanish Main what Flint and his co-authors have done with Europe and the 30 years war. If you have enjoyed the other books in the Ring of Fire series, you are going to love this one.
George Guidall just continues to produce fantastic audiobooks. This book is done with the same excellence that all of his other narrations have had. This is a five star book all around.

Poorly Described Battles
It is difficult to take seriously the uptime battle leaders. No military on earth feels bad for destroying the enemy. Mike Stearns feels terrible for killing his murderous enemy. Eddie Cantrell should be a Social Worker, rather than a Commander. In real life, wars are won by killing the bad guys, not feeling sorry for them! Also, no army or navy personnel are allowed to constantly argue with
higher-ups. In real life, that is extreme insubordination. No military organization can run like that! Except for the above comments, the story was fairly good.
