The year before her thirtieth birthday, Jen Ruiz decided to change everything. Despite being professionally accomplished and contributing to the world as an attorney at a nonprofit, she had yet to achieve the most important goal, according to society: becoming a wife and mother. So, after more ghostings than a graveyard, tired of dating apps and sitting in a windowless office, Jen embarked on an epic challenge to send her twenties out in style.
Twelve months, twelve trips, no excuses.
She started booking flights instead of swiping right, teaching English online to cover costs. Over the course of the year, Jen descended into a volcano in Iceland, volunteered at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand, called in sick to fly in a hot air balloon, and went scuba diving at an underwater museum in Mexico.
She ended up taking twenty trips, almost double her original goal.

When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, Cornelia Fort was already in the air. At 22, Fort had escaped Nashville’s debutante scene for a fresh start as a flight instructor in Hawaii. She and her student were in the middle of a lesson when the bombs began to fall, and they barely made it back to ground. Still, when the US Army Air Forces put out a call for women pilots to aid the war effort, Fort was one of the first to respond. She became one of just over 1,100 women from across the nation to make it through the Army’s rigorous selection process and earn her silver wings.

Jen’s amazing storytelling
This audible performance was done by the author, Jen Ruiz, and I think that’s what makes this such an enjoyable listen. The story in and of itself is already great, so if you have the paperback instead of the audio you’re still in for a great time, but the audio really brings Jen’s experiences to life. This isn’t so much a travel book as it is a memoir of a challenge Jen took and the personal growth she experienced while on it, but the book also has a lot of great gems as it relates to destinations and the opportunities you could have there, not to mention the food shoutouts definitely make you want to get on a plane and try out the local cuisine, especially her description of moussaka.
I think this book is for anyone who has ever felt self conscious about themselves (so just about everyone) and the things one can do to find themselves and be happy in their skin, wherever in the world they may find themselves.

Traveling through life
Jen Ruiz sets out to do 12 trips during her 29th year. She narrates the book herself and it keeps the story personal.
I enjoyed following her travels and it gave me a different perspective on my own.

Not exactly a travel book...
I was very excited to listen to this book after I listened to a Podcast Jen was a guest on. My assumption was this book would be more about travel tips, how to's, tips and tricks. I turned out to be more of a travel romance journal. Entertaining but missed the mark for me personally.

Travel Bug
I have a friend who solo travels and the entire time.Listening to this book all like a picture.Was her going on all these adventures. This is not a book that was on my radar.But I am so glad I stumbled across it.

Becoming Your Own Best Friend
I really appreciated Jen's honesty about herself and her relationships during her 12 months of journeys. I also loved hearing about the different places she travelled to. If you want to hear about someone making big changes in her life, even though scared to do so. and learn about other cultures, this books is worth listening to. Jen's narration was easy to follow. Jen is a very accomplished and interesting person, and it is great she came to find that out. I looked her up and the places she travelled to after while listening to the book.
