Повесть "Раковый корпус" была задумана А.И. Солженицыным в 1954 году, в Ташкенте, где он проходил лечение в онкологическом отделении больницы. Однако замысел ждал своего воплощения почти десять лет. Первоначально повесть была принята к публикации в журнале "Новый мир", и с автором был заключен договор, тем не менее, в то время "Раковый корпус" так и не был издан в СССР, встретив твердый запрет публикации в верхах. Вершиной советского легального существования "Ракового корпуса" был набор нескольких первых глав в "Новом мире". В докладной записке заведующих отделами пропаганды и агитации и культуры ЦК КПСС В. Степакова и В. Шауро от 24 мая 1968 г. отмечалось, что "…редакция "Нового мира", непосредственно его главный редактор А. Твардовский делали неоднократные попытки опубликовать в журнале повесть А. Солженицына "Раковый корпус". В конце декабря по указанию главного редактора часть рукописи была уже направлена в набор…". По распоряжению властей печать была остановлена, а набор рассыпан. В конце концов "Раковый корпус" стал расходиться в СССР в самиздате и вышел в переводах и на русском языке на Западе. В России впервые издан в журнале "Новый мир" в 1990 году.

Best of Solzhenitsyn
Loved it, loved it, loved it... Solzhenitsyn's gift to convey thoughts, emotions, to portray reality of life is outstanding... This book is probably the best I had listed too so far. Over 18 hours long, it is probably not a novella, but a novel. The narration is outstanding as well. Yes, there is a lot of pain in this book, but I did not find it depressing. Author's raw honesty transports you into this Cancer ward, and you get to know it's denizens...
