Задумал я так, и этот замысел остался у меня в уме, девять лет я к нему не прикасался и только в 1959, через девять лет, сел и написал". "Писал я его недолго совсем, всего дней 40, меньше полутора месяцев. Это всегда получается так, если пишешь из густой жизни, быт которой ты чрезмерно знаешь и… только отбиваешься от лишнего материала, только-только чтоб лишнее не лезло, а вот вместить самое необходимое".
