Historia
When Gage & Griswell's star litigator suddenly disappears - along with $5.6 million of its most important client's money - the assignment of locating both goes to Mack Malloy, a 50ish ex-cop, almost ex-drunk, and partner-on-the-wane at G&G. Mack's search takes him into the inner sanctum of his firm and through the shadowy heart of the city itself, on a path that soon runs him up against his longtime nemesis as he plucks the threads of a dangerous web of corruption, deceit, and murder.

Still a delight 35 years later
Revisado: 02-17-25
Still a delight 35 years later. I remember reading this one evening while sitting outside surrounded by a thunderstorm. I think I may have read it in one sitting. Since then I have read every new Turow book I even read one l while on vacation on Ireland. I’ve seen the movie but not the Apple TV series. I still may watch that. I just finished presumed guilty his most recent title. More I need to decide if I will fill in the gaps. I’m old enough I don’t mind rereading. A contemporary classic.

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

The future of chip manufacturing is very precarious
Revisado: 02-11-25
The future of chip manufacturing is very precarious. The book begins with the history of computer chip development. It presents the background of the inspiration that lead to use of photolithography for chip creation and the challenges of developing ever finer transistors to keep up with “Moore’s Law. “ it then presents the background of why the manufacturing became ever more complex and concentrated. TSMC becomes the sole producer of the finest chips and OS vulnerable to both natural disaster and war. IT is clear that whenever TSMC has a major shut down the economic consequences and military consequences will be immense. Yet there is No clear path to a second competitive chip foundary. We have benefited greatly from TSMC and may suffer greatly some day because of its limitations.

Several clever twists. The story definitely reflects a woman’s touch. I thought I had figured things out a couple of times to discover I was wrong at the clever ending.

The Soul of an Old Machine
Revisado: 01-31-25
The Soul of an Old Machine. The first of the authors books I read was: Soul of a New Machine. It was a wonderful and informative read. I have read all three authors books since then. As I am almost 80 myself I found the book very interesting. The nursing home residents were all brought to life; shown to have soul. I was surprised that things took place the nineties. The nursing home wasn’t as depersonalizing as I expected.

Historia
At Logos College in West Texas, huge young men, vacuum-packed into shoulder pads and shiny helmets, play football with intense passion. During an uncharacteristic winning season, the perplexed and distracted running back Gary Harkness has periodic fits of nuclear glee; he is fueled and shielded by his fear of and fascination with nuclear conflict. Among oddly afflicted and recognizable players, the terminologies of football and nuclear war - the language of end zones - become interchangeable, and their meaning deteriorates as the collegiate year runs its course.

Historia
For a long time, scientists have wondered how life has emerged from inanimate chemistry, and whether Earth is the only place where it exists. Charles Darwin speculated about life on Earth beginning in a warm little pond. Some of his contemporaries believed that life existed on Mars. It once seemed inevitable that the truth would be known by now. It is not. For more than a century, the origins and extent of life have remained shrouded in mystery. But, as Mario Livio and Jack Szostak reveal in Is Earth Exceptional?, the veil is finally lifting.

Much discussion of the biochemistry underlying life.
Revisado: 01-24-25
Much discussion of the biochemistry underlying life. The author outs taking a rigorous approach to the question of whether there is life elsewhere in the universe. The number of exoplanets that are not our less earth like implies life elsewhere is likely. He reviews possible conclusive signs of life. He concludes that we have yet to identify extraterrestrial life, but he expects advances in astronomical instrumentation makes that discovery in th near future likely.
The discussion of how readily we can no detect exoplanets is fascinating.
