The narration was terrible. Why?? I checked out samples of the narrator’s other titles and they seemed okay! How did this happen?? I refused to stop listening because I’m not about to waste a credit, lol, but it was difficult. But beyond that…? The MC didn’t have any character development, it was all the “villain” who learned how to tell almost funny jokes. The pacing was very off, with all the reveals coming at the end in the form of exposition. The setting was weird: Medieval Times with sleepovers and GNOs. The plot? Y’all. It was all over the place. And besides squishy eyeballs and a handful of swear words, nothing adult happens. The “twist” was inauthentic and there the writing switched between suspense and mystery as far as when readers were given information. The writing had potential and maybe a couple of the characters? Like, I’m curious about Kingsley, but not enough to suffer through another volume.

This was such a great listen! Chase is believable and likable, and I was rooting for him the whole way. I liked the setting, and the narration was excellent, I liked the subtle differences in the voices and the pace was perfect. I learned a thing or two, as well, just in case I'm ever involved in espionage.

Excellent performance paired with an engaging plot and a really terrible, irresponsible conclusion. It isn't realistic, it isn't helpful, it isn't fresh or clever or anything except ugly. Paints the protagonist as a whiney, vengeful victim. The writing choices made were really appalling, IMO.

This sequel brings the action early and keeps up the pace through to the end. Ms. Blade does an excellent job of keeping the reader engaged while she develops the characters and moves the plot along at a thrilling clip. You'll definitely enjoy where the series is going!

Sir Philip Pullman is KING of story telling. Michael Sheen is the ultimate narrator. Good God, what a glorious union of brilliance these two create together.

I'm hurting for Pan and Lyra. Get a hold of yourself, girl, your daemon needs you! Honestly frustrated right now and chomping at the bit for the final book. I own every audible book, and every hardback signed special edition copy of both series. I want to marry Malcolm Polstead.

Anywho, I'm a fan, lol.

Neil Gaiman is a genius. I own several copies of this book, one of them a signed first edition. I will re-listen to this soon. Mr. Gaiman's story-telling is masterful, his narration engaging and dynamic, his characters poignant and his world building second to none.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane is sheer brilliance. Reading it is like watching a garden of volunteer plants seed in a fallow field. Listening is like being caught out in a downpour and forgetting you have an umbrella because the rain is so sweet.

This is imagination propagating dreams real-time.

I'm so, SO glad I reread this title. I first read the paperback a decade ago, and didn't finish. It was too bleak for me, it left me with a feeling of grime and hopelessness. I resisted because a student I tutor picked this for her free reading choice. I wasn't looking forward to it. But I picked it up on audible this time and I'm fantastically happy I did. This is a testament to Jeff Woodman's excellent narration skills. The story took on a whole new dimensions for me.

I've been a special education teacher for many years, and when I first read TCIDNT, Christopher's voice in my head was all wrong. Which, it turns out, was a ME thing, NOT a Mark Haddon thing. Narrated by Mr. Woodman, Christopher's matter-of-fact, gentle innocence came shining through. I was captivated not only by the plot, Christophers character arc, but by the character development of the secondary characters as well.

This book is sheer brilliance people. I'm in awe of both Mr. Haddon and Mr. Woodman's compassionate and unflinching portrayal of Christopher's world in this story.

I wasn't familiar with this part of WWII. I read the first half on kindle and then listened to the second half. The story is straightforward, told from the POV of a 16-year-old boy. The author did an excellent job of creating the setting and character development. Once the soldiers arrive at Cat Island, I was in a constant state of anxiety. I was reading/listening with a student I tutor, so I was listening and putting myself in Eddy's shoes, processing as myself, and anticipating how my 12 year-old student might be thinking/feeling. I couldn't help but extrapolate the learned behavior of hate from the animals to humans: to societies, to entire populations and eras in history. It made me sick to my stomach. So, well done, Graham Salisbury.

As for the narration, I felt the tone was too aggressive throughout. There were times when it was definitely appropriate, but it never varied. I also had a difficult time with the inconsistency of chapter breaks, and the audible throat-clearing and swallowing of the narrator, as well as page turns and maybe mic hits? I kinda wanted to claw my eardrums out at times. But then I just started listening in the car while I was driving so the engine noise would drown those things out.

As the story reached climax and resolution, I was completely hooked, and stayed up late in the night to finish. Overall, it's an excellent read if you can get past the narration.

While I do wish the story had been more developed so I could really sink my teeth into what makes La Sombra tick, I was not disappointed with my decision to listen. The pace is quite fast, and I was impressed with science behind the “time slips” in the story. A lot was going on and I did want to slow down and savor it more, but o guess that is a good sign that it was well written. Hopefully this will become just a chapter in a larger work devoted to these characters:
