Historia
It is the morning of the reaping that will kick off the 10th annual Hunger Games. In the Capitol, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is preparing for his one shot at glory as a mentor in the Games. The once-mighty house of Snow has fallen on hard times, its fate hanging on the slender chance that Coriolanus will be able to out charm, outwit, and outmaneuver his fellow students to mentor the winning tribute. The odds are against him. He’s been given the humiliating assignment of mentoring the female tribute from District 12, the lowest of the low.

Loved the first half, hated the second
Revisado: 09-05-20
I found the first half of the book to be engaging, fun, and full of surprises. The turn the book takes in its second half felt flat and predictable. The main character suddenly becomes utterly unlikable and nearly every thought he shares is either whiny, shallow, or entirely off base. The author is constantly telling us what is about to happen by overly explaining what the main character thinks will happen and then taking us in another, obvious direction. His journey from hero to villain rings hollow. His hate for the birds has no backstory and simply comes off as cruel. He is a heroic truth teller in the first half, and then, as though he had a severe brain injury, he becomes someone else entirely without adequate explanation. The reasoning for his banishment is nonsensical to the reader, and feels entirely within reason and not like an infraction. I endured the final six hours of listening, but with great disappointment for what fell like lazy storytelling.
As for the narration, I have heard the narrator read many books, and I’ve seen him on Broadway. Santino is remarkably talented and felt underutilized in this performance. For such a talented singer to only read the songs felt like a massive miss that drained much of the magic from this title.

In the spirit of Steve Jobs and Moneyball, Elon Musk is both an illuminating and authorized look at the extraordinary life of one of Silicon Valley's most exciting, unpredictable, and ambitious entrepreneurs - a real-life Tony Stark - and a fascinating exploration of the renewal of American invention and its new makers.

Revisado: 08-15-15
This was an exceptional and honest look into the life of a modern day genius. It was inspirational while also inviting me into the brilliance of Musk; so much so that while reading, I purchased Tesla stock and looked up the model 3 to determine when I could be placed on the reservation list.

The new question: Ten years after the worldwide bestseller Good to Great, Jim Collins returns to ask: Why do some companies thrive in uncertainty, even chaos, and others do not? In Great by Choice, Collins and his colleague, Morten T. Hansen, enumerate the principles for building a truly great enterprise in unpredictable, tumultuous, and fast-moving times. The new study: Great by Choice distinguishes itself from Collins’s prior work by its focus on the type of unstable environments faced by leaders today.

Really Dynamite
Revisado: 04-10-13
This book was fun to listen to because Collins is such an animated talker. And the 20 mile march is an incredibly sticky concept I found great value in. This is one of those audiobooks that provoked so much thinking on my end that I found my mind wandering incessantly; both a good and bad thing! I've already listened to some parts twice and feel like this is a book I could listen to a dozen times and still gain value.

Historia
Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. Neurosurgeon Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back. Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere.

Enjoyed it, Wanted to Enjoy it More
Revisado: 04-10-13
This book has a beauty about it that is undeniable and it gave me a sense of calm about the end of life. From a writing standpoint, it felt like it needed a stronger editor to bring it to life and help us feel more deeply connected with the experience of the author. He would graze over subjects that sounded fascinating and then skip right over them. That aspect seemed lazy from an editorial standpoint and I found it aggravating, but only because I was enjoying the book as much as I was and didn't want to feel cheated out of an ounce of its goodness.

Crappy as an audiobook
Revisado: 04-10-13
Trying to listen to lists after lists in audiobook form is like asking to have your eyes gauged out with spoons. So the first half was interesting, but this is pointless as an audiobook in my opinion.

So badly wanted to get into this
Revisado: 04-10-13
Just found it boring as hell and gave up less than halfway through. Went in with high expectations because the video trailer for the book is nothing short of miraculous. But the approach to the book itself was typical and uninspiring.

Loved 90% of this and Hated the Ending
Revisado: 04-10-13
Man this was great until the last 10% of the book. I simply hated the ending and felt it dragged on way too long. At the end I felt such little satisfaction that it made me angry. Amazing til then.

Couldn't Get into This
Revisado: 04-10-13
Tried reading this with a book club and we all disliked it. It made us feel bad about ourselves and so we stopped reading it. Most of what I found in the first few chapters seemed like common knowledge being treated like new epiphany and that didn't help.
