Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

At last!
Revisado: 11-17-24
I’ve read every book in the series and the stories had grown stale recently (even silly at times), but Grey Wolf brings it back to the level of first rate mysteries. The new narrator gives it the authentic Quebecois sound and feel it needs.

Historia
When, at age forty-six, Nancy Pelosi, mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress, Alexandra Pelosi answered: “Mother, get a life!” And so Nancy did, and what a life it has been. In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care.

Historia
It’s spring and Three Pines is reemerging after the harsh winter. But not everything buried should come alive again. Not everything lying dormant should reemerge. But something has. As the villagers prepare for a special celebration, Armand Gamache and Jean-Guy Beauvoir find themselves increasingly worried. A young man and woman have reappeared in the Sûreté du Québec investigators’ lives after many years. The two were young children when their troubled mother was murdered, leaving them damaged, shattered. Now they’ve arrived in the village of Three Pines. But to what end?

Stale, repetitive and lengthy
Revisado: 01-30-23
I've read every book in the series. At one time, it was fresh and worthwhile. It's been running out of steam for a while and needs a new approach or allow the Chief Inspector to retire full time.

Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Frustrating
Revisado: 12-18-19
The title is rather misleading. Don't expect to come away with a great deal of insight on how to better bridge a communication gap with strangers. The stories Gladwell relates are interesting, but are also too drawn out and leave you scratching your head as to how they really tie together. By the end, you have the sense this could have been better organized, shortened, and the points made more directly. Not as satisfying as other Gladwell books and articles.

In 2010, the words “earthquake swarm” entered the lexicon in Oklahoma. That same year, a trove of Michael Jackson memorabilia—including his iconic crystal-encrusted white glove—was sold at auction for over $1 million to a guy who was, officially, just the lowly forestry minister of the tiny nation of Equatorial Guinea. And in 2014, Ukrainian revolutionaries raided the palace of their ousted president and found a zoo of peacocks, gilded toilets, and a floating restaurant modeled after a Spanish galleon.

Good points, but too stretched out
Revisado: 10-22-19
I love Rachel, and the story she tells is a significant and important one, but the book seemed to drag on at certain points. One test for me in whether something is 5 stars is if I literally can't stop listening, as opposed to having to push myself to finish. Kind of like the difference between rushing to eat dessert and forcing yourself to eat vegetables because they're good for you. I'm afraid this book was in the latter category,

Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Disappointing listen
Revisado: 02-19-19
Perhaps this is a better "read" than a "listen" - and even then it may be limited to professional academics. I was looking forward to understanding a giant of history, but the book is swamped with too much detail that didn't seem to advance the story of who this man truly was. I had to force myself to get through the book, which is a rare experience for me - and a sign that something wasn't right about the presentation. The narration didn't help; it was somewhat over-dramatic and didn't add the extra dimensions of character and spirit that good narrations often provide about the people portrayed in the book.

Historia
The 1968 US presidential election was the young Lawrence O'Donnell's political awakening, and in the decades since it has remained one of his abiding fascinations. For years he has deployed one of America's shrewdest political minds to understanding its dynamics, not just because it is fascinating in itself but because in it is contained the essence of what makes America different and how we got to where we are now.

Fascinating revelations & insights. Breathtaking.
Revisado: 12-15-17
What made the experience of listening to Playing with Fire the most enjoyable?
The behind-the-scenes look and integration of so many diverse individuals and topics, and how these have lead to much in our current political climate.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The fact that there was no single character - rather, how so many people and their idiosyncratic motivations and viewpoints wound up "contributing" (often in spite of themselves and their intentions) to seismic cultural changes, the shocks of which are still being felt.
What about Lawrence O'Donnell’s performance did you like?
The book and his reading of it are quintessential Lawrence: extremely smart, comprehensive, thoughtful, penetrating, caring, honest and absorbing.
Any additional comments?
This is a superb presentation of history and political nuts-and-bolts that reveals many not-well-known facts and behind-the-scenes insights involving a crucial time in our history. How transformative all of these events were in shaping decades of government and social actions is a theme that repeatedly smacks you in an eye-popping way as it's likely so many of us have forgotten, or simply missed, how we arrived at today's political environment.
Lawrence is scrupulously objective in presenting the position, thinking and back-story of each person, regardless of where they fit on the political spectrum. It is a book that you can't-put-down, with no dull points, and something that every one, regardless of age or political preference, will find highly informational and entertaining.

Historia
Leonardo da Vinci created the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and engineering. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry.

Better to "read" than to "listen"
Revisado: 12-11-17
Would you listen to Leonardo da Vinci again? Why?
No
Any additional comments?
Better to "read" than to "listen" to this book - much is lost without being able to actually see the pictures and details at the same time.
I've read or listened to all of Mr. Isaacson's other biographies and thoroughly enjoyed each one; in contrast, this one did not give me the same inner picture so by the time I finished I did not feel I had as much insight into Leonardo as I hoped to obtain. Still a worthwhile read (or listen), but not in the same class as prior works.
