Acerca de esta escucha

"Brassard's accents—whether French Canadian, Italian, or continental French—create indelible characters. His performance lets us feel Reine Marie's warmth and Armand's affectionate nature, and he adds an additional layer to surly Ruth and her potty-mouthed duck. Exciting and entertaining."—AudioFile (Earphones Award winner)

The 19th mystery in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Armand Gamache series.

Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF, the nineteenth novel in Louise Penny's #1 New York Times-bestselling series. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list—and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching.

Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Québec and across borders. Their hunt grows increasingly desperate, even frantic, as the enormity of the creature they’re chasing becomes clear. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages.

Including Three Pines.

But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. Great story. Grating performance.

The book is great. I have listened to all of the books in the series. The two previous narrators had voices that were easy and comfortable to listen to. But I am having great difficulty listening to this new narrator. Yes, it is nice to hear the French accent. But his voice is gravelly voice and sharp, stacatoto and choppy way of speaking is extremely difficult for me. I don't know that I can finish the book. Normally, I listen to a book from this series in 2 days. But this will take me at least a couple of weeks, if I finish it. His voice is just so grating! There is no smoothness to his voice or the way he speaks. Honesly, I am getting tears in my eyes because my anxiety is up from it and I am so disappointed! I hope Ms. Penny finds someone else with a smooth way of speaking for the next books. I adore the books. But I am legally blind and cannot see writing to read. So this is my only way of enjoying the books.
And I am absolutely NO enjoying this one.

Love the past books in this series, but…

I began the book with an open mind, super excited for a new addition to this lovely series. Sadly, narrator just doesn’t get it right. I kept having to rewind to find out who was talking. Men, women, old, young all sounded the same. I am truly disappointed in this Audible purchase. The narration is just awful. Although I have listened to the first 18 books twice due to my deep love of these characters, I have listened to this one twice just to try to follow it. The characters in Three Pines play a seriously minor role in this story which is sad. I didn’t even laugh or giggle once.

too complex weary of all the corruption

Why does every book have to have enemies with so much power and why does he have to be betrayed by close friends in every other book? seriously. it's getting old. and the narrator, while competent, cannot distinguish the voices of the characters so sometimes I had to go back and figure out who'd said what. the book is ok. I've loved the series. but it's getting old and losing something

I wanted to love it.

How do I say this? Louise Penny-and inspector Gamache books are truly something I treasure and have always followed.
Yes, going from the first books’ narrator to Robert Bathurst was initially difficult but only bc I missed Gamache all over again. And yes, I understand Louise needed to find someone with an authentic Quebec accent. But. I’m so sad to say I did not enjoy this book. In fact, if I didn’t have such loyalty to the series, I might have given up and just read the hard copy. I didn’t have that luxury though.
The narrator tries, but I had the hardest time discerning characters and if there were more than one speaking in a conversation.
I don’t know how to explain.. but I won’t buy the next audiobook, I’ll stick with the hard copy. And hope it’s a better example of Three Pines family members. Miss them.

Very disappointed with this narrator.

I can’t concentrate on the story line of this book due to the poor performance of the narrator. Extremely disappointed. I was so excited for this book to launch - two years since the last book dropped- but I have no idea who is speaking,. What dialogue is important. What steps the characters are taking to solve this mystery because this narrator does not have the skill to read a story much less create individual characters. The characters have lost their voices. Terrible choice by Louis Penny.

Very poor new narrator

after years and years of being a Louise Penny audio book fan and recommending her books to many, I will return this audio book once I've written the review. The new narrator sort of tries to do different voices but doesn't really differentiate them. Does not give Gamache the gravitas that has been conveyed by in past books by story and narrator. I can't really tell if this is a good story or not due to narrator.

Penny again writes an exciting story with characters we love.

Plot was intricate and almost believable. The characters from Three Pines continue to make the community the one that we wish to return to.

Clever, clever, clever!

I loved this book! Binge listened and will listen again! Louise Penny is on the cutting edge of domestic terrorism. She also has an intriguing way of setting up a scene so you are constantly trying your best to figure out what is happening, just like Armand!
