What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narrator was excellent and the best part of this audio book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Tracy Barone again?

No, her protagonist was an obnoxious teenager who grew to be an obnoxious adult.

Which character – as performed by Courtney Patterson – was your favorite?

I enjoyed the narrator's performance of the mother, Cece.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment at the lack of depth of the characters was my reaction.

Any additional comments?

The end of the book showed the main character having a baby on her own after a night of drunken sex. The protagonist never grew up into an adult. It was sad.

A talented writer becomes a pawn for the media

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

The story seems obligated to include the talking points of the liberal media.
Rich people must be bad and corrupt. Poor people are better. The best people
are the illegals who come from Central America.

If you’ve listened to books by Joyce Maynard before, how does this one compare?

I have read and enjoyed books by Joyce Maynard before, but never felt that she
had to suck up to the liberal media to have her book published.

Which character – as performed by Joyce Maynard – was your favorite?

Joyce Maynard did an excellent job of narrating her own novel.

Did Under the Influence inspire you to do anything?

I remember Maynard's essay in the New York Times Magazine section when she was in college. I will be very hesitant to read her other novels because it may be more propaganda from the liberal press.

Your novels would be much better when you don't have to push a liberal agenda.

Some Surprising Disappointments

What disappointed you about Orphan Train?

I was disappointed that the author created an unappealing character (Dina) and then described her as someone who listens to conservative radio. The author has a bias
against people who may have opinions other than hers. There was no need to bring
politics into the story.

What do you think your next listen will be?

It will be literary fiction.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator was not consistent in her use of an Irish accent.

What character would you cut from Orphan Train?

I would not elminate any characters.

The character of Molly was such an obnoxious teenager that it was difficult to be
sympathetic to her.

An ourstanding narrator with an outstanding story

Would you listen to Flame Tree Road again? Why?

I might read the book, but I prefer not to repeat an audio book.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Flame Tree Road?

The dialogue spoken by Neil Shah was most memorable. Whether he was speaking as a male or female, young or old, English or Indian, his characters were believeable.

Which character – as performed by Neil Shah – was your favorite?

Biren, the main character was my favorite.

Any additional comments?

I liked that some of the events were unexpected and presented an interesting twist to the plot.

A Disappointing Book for me

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I think someone who likes books like "Lord of the Rings" or stoies that take place in Sherwood Forest.

Would you ever listen to anything by Kazuo Ishiguro again?

Yes, I loved "When we were Orphans." I would try another book by Ishiguro.

Which character – as performed by David Horovitch – was your favorite?

The husband, especially when he called his wife, "Princess."

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Buried Giant?

I would concentrate more on the diaglogue and less on the descriptions of the setting.

I think the narrator did a superb job of becoming the different characters.

I will listen to another book by the same author.

How could the performance have been better?

John Lee brought out every character with his amazing narration. I hope to hear from him again in future books.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

It was interesting to see how growing up in 2 different countries (England and China) had major influences on the main character.
