Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

Very interesting, captivating story
Revisado: 11-01-24
I was definitely hooked listening to this one. I love Shakespeare and have been curious about the question of his authorship ever since I first heard of it years ago. This was an interesting take and it was really nice to hear the afterward by the author where we breaks down the research behind her fiction. I felt like the speech in the 1500s sections were a trifle too modern at times and the modern parallel story had some elements that didn't seem realistic to me, but as a whole, it was a captivating story. Definitely worth a read if you love historical fiction and if you have studied/enjoy the works of Shakespeare. Be advised: there is a fair amount of sex scenes and also could be triggering for victims of abuse.

Intriguing portraits and excellent performances
Revisado: 10-28-24
Loved reading about Anne of Cleves, Katharine Howard, and Jane Boleyn! Very interesting to hear their perspectives. And the performance by the voice of Lady Rochford was exceptional, especially near the end. So good. Yes, I agree with other reviewers that there were a few moments of repetition that didn't seem necessary or logical, but, on the whole, I loved this book. I was captivated.

An interesting look at Margaret Tudor
Revisado: 10-21-24
I enjoyed learning a bit about the life of Henry VIII's sister, Margaret. I must admit her character for the first half or so of the book was rather annoying and shallow/self-involved. But, knowing that is likely the reality of how she was brought up to be, I could get past the annoyance of the character and be enthralled by the ups and downs of her life. Happily, Gregory nicely rounded out her character later in the book, thankfully. Overall, I'm glad I listened to this one - it is an interesting look at another side of the story for this generation of Tudors.

Historia
In The Kingmaker's Daughter, number one New York Times best-selling author Philippa Gregory presents the riveting story of Anne Neville, her sister Isabel, and their ever-changing fortunes. The Kingmaker's Daughter is the gripping and ultimately tragic story of the daughters of the man known as the "Kingmaker", the most powerful magnate in England through the Cousins' Wars. In the absence of a son and heir, he uses the two girls as pawns in his political games.

An intriguing different perspective
Revisado: 07-05-24
Kudos to Ms. Gregory for showing her artistry by portraying the same story as the white queen from the opposite perspective of Anne Neville! This was a well-crafted retelling and was tragic to hear the fears and misconceptions of "the other side." This was one i "couldn't put down." Highly recommend if you have already read the earlier books.

Complex, Mysterious, and Enjoyable
Revisado: 11-09-23
I loved this book! It gives a lovely sense of escapism into the past, not to mention the glamour of the golden age of Hollywood and glimpses of pre and post-war Europe. Parallel story lines and complex back stories make this a very rich and gripping read. The narration was well-performed as well. I highly recommend this book. I very much enjoyed Ms. Foley's other novels, The Guest List, The Hunting Party, and The Paris Apartment, but I think this one was my favorite so far.

Enjoyed this book, at 1.2x speed
Revisado: 10-02-22
This was a great read. Loved the story. Very interesting mystery that did keep me guessing! And a sweet love story too. I had read other reviews commenting on how very slooooowly the reader speaks- I thought I could handle it after sampling it and found that I was wrong. BUT, if you set the playback to 1.2x speed, it's about what you would expect a normal performance rhythm should be.

I really enjoyed this book. Likeable characters, good plot (though at times predictable), and a fair helping of tension and romance, though not taking things too far to call this a clean read. Highly recommend!

Assuming their roles as the new Lord and Lady Kenefick and returning to Robinswood with the plan to drag it back from the brink of dereliction is taking its toll on Kate and Sam. With a young family to raise, a very limited budget, and only Kate’s parents to help, the task seems insurmountable.

Lovely continuation/conclusion, but a bit forced
Revisado: 09-22-22
I enjoyed this whole series, following the characters through WWII and beyond. This book was a good completion of their stories, though at times, some of the plot did feel a bit forced - some of the drama felt unnecessary, like it was dredged up to flesh out the book. And a couple of the characters completely shifted their personalities, which seemed somewhat unrealistic: Lilian, for example, seemed to have turned on a dime between the end of the 2nd book and the beginning of this one. Sean Lacy seemed to completely shift as well. But, that being said, I enjoyed this book. I do have to say, I missed the performance from the lady who did the first two books. The change in character voices was a bit jarring and some of them felt a little strange and the accents a bit muddled. She still did a good job, just not as great.
