Philippa Gregory
Acerca de esta escucha
A brand-new unabridged recording of Philippa Gregory’s classic best seller featuring an afterword read by the author!
From “the queen of royal fiction” (USA Today) comes this New York Times best seller featuring three very different women whose fates are each bound by a bloody curse: the legacy of the Boleyn family.
After the death of his third wife, Jane Seymour, King Henry VIII of England decides to take a new wife, but this time, not for love. The Boleyn Inheritance follows three women whose lives are forever changed because of the king’s decision, as they must balance precariously in an already shaky Tudor Court.
Anne of Cleves is to be married to Henry to form a political alliance, though the rocky relationship she has to the king does not bode well for her or for England.
Katherine Howard is the young, beautiful woman who captures Henry’s eye, even though he is set to marry Anne. Her spirit runs free, and her passions run hot - though her affections may not be returned upon the king.
Jane Rochford was married to George Boleyn, and it was her testimony that sent her husband and infamous sister-in-law Anne to their deaths. Throughout the country, her name is known for malice, jealousy, and twisted lust.
The Boleyn Inheritance is a novel drawn tight as a lute string about three women whose positions brought them wealth, admiration, and power, as well as deceit, betrayal, and terror.

Historia
They were the Boleyns, once one of England's most powerful family. Anne Boleyn captured the hand of Henry VIII, and now we see the rise and fall of their family fortunes through the eyes of the eldest Boleyn daughter, Mary. Mary Boleyn is overshadowed in history by her sister, Anne, but it was she who first caught the eye of Henry VIII, setting the stage for her family's dramatic rise to power - and ultimate fall from grace. Although Henry set her aside as his mistress, Mary still navigated the dangerous waters of the Tudor court while forging ahead to find a life.

In her essay on Jacquetta, Philippa Gregory uses original documents, archaeology and histories of myth and witchcraft to create the first-ever biography of the young duchess who was to survive two reigns and two wars to become the first lady at two rival courts. David Baldwin, established author on the Wars of the Roses, tells the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the first commoner to marry a king of England for love, and Michael Jones, fellow of the Royal Historical Society, writes of Margaret Beaufort, the almost-unknown matriarch of the House of Tudor. The Women of the Cousins’ War will appeal to all.

Historia
The New York Times bestselling author of the Six Tudor Queens series explores the private side of the legendary king Henry VIII and his dramatic and violent reign in this extraordinary historical novel. Young Henry began his rule as a magnificent and chivalrous Renaissance prince who embodied every virtue. He had all the qualities to make a triumph of his rule, yet we remember only the violence. Henry famously broke with the Pope, founding the Church of England and launching a religious revolution that divided his kingdom. He beheaded two of his wives and cast aside two others.

Did you know that there are more penises than women in the Bayeux Tapestry? That the Peasants’ Revolt of 1381 was started and propelled by women who were protesting a tax on women? Or that Charles Darwin believed not just that women were naturally inferior to men, but that they’d evolve to become ever more inferior? These are just a few of the startling findings you will learn from listening to Philippa Gregory’s Normal Women. In this ambitious book, she tells the story of England over 900 years, for the very first time placing women—some fifty per cent of the population—center stage.

Queen Anne ascended the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland in 1702. By the end of her comparatively short 12-year reign, Britain had emerged as a great power. Stupendous!!!!
I was up all night listening to this book. No embellishment here......this series is epic.
From the author's use of the written word as cinematography (yes, it's that good), the "living characters", and the fabulous narration I could find no flaws in this book.
This series is amazing, done and said. Get it. You won't regret it.

Great Listen!
I love Phillipa Gregory's historical fiction because she always leaves me feeling as though I could be reading/listening to a story about people that live in the here and now. She puts you in their shoes, and gives some insight (even if it may be fiction) into how choices were made and why. The Audible versions always select the very best narrators for her books and this one is no different. Highly recommend!

One of my favorite books by Philippa!
Absolutely loved this. I found the characters so compelling, particularly Anne of Cleves who was in an impossible situation. My favorite part, however, is the epilogue in which PG gives a scathing account of King Henry VIII and names him for what he was--a serial wife abuser and killer, and a tyrant.

Another excellent book in this series!
The user below complains of the lack of the french sword but it was stated multiple times. The term "her head on the block" is used by characters but never the ax.

Intricate telling of well known Tudor women
I like how we got to hear how ingratiated these well known women were, though none of them were really that close. Lady Rochford in particular. We all know her but rarely hear things from her perspective. I did notice several instances of repetitiveness that messed with the flow but not so bad that it ruined the story. All in all, well done.

Unbelievable. So authentic.
This is one of the best stories I have ever heard on Audible. It is perhaps the greatest and most perceptive account of the history of King Edward the Eighth's rule over his kingdom and his wives I have ever heard, and from a woman's perspective instead of the usual strictly historian's view. From his rule as the King of England, after decreeing the beheading of his wife, Anne Boleyn, and until his death in 1547, the intimate relationship between these three women, Anne of Cleves, Jane Rochford, and Catherine Howard, is both believable and astounding. They are--or were--but mere pawns in the grand scheme of each of their families' ambitions--their desires, their deceits, their greed for power and title and wealth. I could not stop listening, finding any excuse to leave the room and put my earplugs back in to hear more! From the first chapter to the last, I was taken: the narratives' voices of the three major characters were impeccable and perfect, their accents and diction totally believable, with both emotion and passion beautifully portrayed. The story--an authentic narration of the grand yet brutal power of a king of England in Tudor times and the innocent women and people who fell under his reign, is breathtaking in its authenticity. The story builds like a staircase to several crescendos, with the unfolding of one crisis after another. it will keep you totally engrossed, and transport you back to the 14th century, where you will be forced to beg for forgiveness for your so-called sins, or rise to the judgement of your king, your Lord and Master, and suffer an ignoble death with dignity and grace.
