Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Historia
Geralt of Rivia is a Witcher, one of the few capable of hunting the monsters that prey on humanity. He uses magical signs, potions, and the pride of every Witcher—two swords, steel and silver. But a contract has gone wrong, and Geralt finds himself without his signature weapons. Now he needs them back, because sorcerers are scheming, and across the world clouds are gathering. The season of storms is coming. . .

This can be read either first or last, and it is a good book end for the series. I don’t know if we will ever get a proper addition to the series, but to know that there will always be a Witcher to push back the darkness is a wonderful musing to end the series.

The world outside has grown toxic, the view of it limited, talk of it forbidden. The remnants of humanity live underground in a single silo. But there are always those who hope, who dream. These are the dangerous people, the residents who infect others with their optimism. Their punishment is simple. They are given the very thing they want: They are allowed to go outside.

What a ride. My friend recommended this because of his shock that the show was made. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I enjoy the Fallout franchise, and what I knew was that this was like Fallout, if Fallout didn’t have that signature humor.
The characters are so well crafted, and the world building is top notch. It is a bleak, beautiful setting and if you enjoy Sci fi, you’ve gotta give this a chance. I hope to craft a story as solid as the one Hugh has built.

After walking through the portal in the Tower of Swallows while narrowly escaping death, Ciri finds herself in a completely different world...an Elven world. She is trapped, with no way out. Time does not seem to exist, and there are no obvious borders or portals to cross back into her home world. But this is Ciri, the child of prophecy, and she will not be defeated. She knows she must escape to finally rejoin the Witcher, Geralt, and his companions - and also to try to conquer her worst nightmare.

A culmination of all the stories before it. Andrzej brings a satisfying conclusion to the separation of Geralt, Ciri, and Yen. When they do, finally, meet again it fulfills the anticipation and emotional hopes I had for their reunion.
This is a great book, truly, and it cemented itself, to me, that The Witcher series is a benchmark in modern fantasy. I look forward to the final book in the franchise.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.
Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

It has been 40 years since the publication of this classic science-fiction novel that changed the way we look at the stars and ourselves. From the savannas of Africa at the dawn of mankind to the rings of Saturn as man adventures to the outer rim of our solar system, 2001: A Space Odyssey is a journey unlike any other.

It is a great classic. It has been a long time since I had seen it, but having recently watched “Station Eleven,” I had an urge to read this.
It established so much of the modern sci fi genre, specifically hard sci fi. It paved the way for “The Expanse,” and even though I haven’t finished that book series (yet), I have a feeling that it will pull a lot more from this than I expect. Rightly so, this became the template for a reason. It still lives up to that.

What does it mean to be sentient? What does it mean to have empathy? If we cannot have empathy, are we just simple beasts roaming existence?
I think this is the argument, the story Adrian weaves in Children of Time. If we do not have empathy, are we even sentient? If we cannot see another creature as worthy of life, can we call ourselves human, or are we just “monkeys” grasping at life? If we are human, are we empathic creatures, or are we just meant to destroy everything we touch? Is empathy the highest form of evolution? Adrian thinks so, and he shows it in a beautiful story I highly recommend.

I usually don’t read YA. Of course, I grew up reading Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, and Animorphs, but the YA aspect wasn’t what drew me into those stories. What drew me around to Dana’s story was a recommendation from a friend because they knew I enjoyed stories of the Gothic variety. What Dana has done here is craft an excellent story of finding our place in the world, and young love, in 19th century Scotland. It is a beautiful story of young romance and self discovery, and the sinister monster behind a deadly plague. I highly recommend this tale, and look forward to her next entry in this series.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

How does one write a memoir about their first 30 years? Honesty, I think, and Jenette is honest. She tells it like it is and we see how the things in her childhood formed the woman she eventually became. I’m not sure I will ever be able to expand on my own life story like she has, but if I ever do, I’m going to take notes on how she did it. I hope I can be as graceful and forgiving as she is in her story.

Death has been fired by the Auditors of Reality for the heinous crime of developing…a personality. Sent to live like everyone else, Death takes a new name and begins working as a farmhand. He's got the scythe already, after all. And for humanity, Death is just…gone. Which leads to the kind of chaos you always get when an important public service is withdrawn. If Death doesn't come for you, then what are you supposed to do in the meantime? You can't have the undead wandering about like lost souls—there's no telling what might happen.

Reaper Man Review
Revisado: 01-28-23
How one bounces back from getting sacked from your job tells you a lot about yourself. For Death, he was shocked, maybe a bit sad. He has never done anything wrong, but still, he got fired. But then, he realized, he got the time of his life.
This is a beautiful story of growth and acceptance. Death becomes a new person, and so does Windle Poons, literally. Death becomes Bill Door, a sharecropper of sorts, and Windle Poons accidentally becomes a zombie. They both meet interesting and wonderful new people, and they help out those they can. They lost something, but they both gained new friendships. Maybe, it’s one of the best examples of how he can bounce back from a loss. The grieving time is needed, but once we have, oh, the wonderful things we can experience.
