Historia
Coexisting but conflicting needs create self-sabotaging behaviors. This is why we resist efforts to change, often until they feel completely futile. But by extracting crucial insight from our most damaging habits, building emotional intelligence by better understanding our brains and bodies, releasing past experiences at a cellular level, and learning to act as our highest potential future selves, we can step out of our own way and into our potential.

Boring litany
Revisado: 04-03-23
Humorless, unstructured. Felt like a list of how we are all failing.
Would have preferred some case studies or anecdotes to make it more memorable and relatable. I got a few insights from it, but boy it was a slog!

Historia
Corporate auditor Sam Keller, careful to a fault, has decided to live it up for a change. And what better spot for business-class hedonism than the boomtown of Dubai, where resort islands materialize from open ocean, fortunes are made overnight, and skiers crisscross the snowy slopes of a shopping mall. But when a colleague is murdered during a night on the town, Sam soon finds himself waist-deep in a bewildering, lethal mix of mobsters, prostitutes, and crooked cops.

Well-written & performed mystery in faraway land
Revisado: 04-19-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes...this book transcends the novelty of the setting and winds up being a generally well done and fun novel with flawed but lovable characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Anwar Sharaf becomes your favorite. He has a great backstory and perfectly conveys the conflict between traditional values and modern living, while being a loving father and loyal ally to Sam.
Have you listened to any of Christopher Lane’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No, but I thought the performance was excellent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes.
Any additional comments?
I picked this up after a trip to Dubai. I had meant to read it on the plane but wound up listening afterwards and I'm glad I did--the places meant a lot more to me after my visit. I was pleasantly surprised that this was such a good story, regardless of the location.

Historia
On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge.

Just Can't Give Toss for these Characters
Revisado: 10-19-13
Would you try another book from Gillian Flynn and/or Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ?
The reading was decent, I'd give them another shot. I would be VERY cautious about trying another book from Flynn.
Would you ever listen to anything by Gillian Flynn again?
Doubtful.
Did Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes--separate voices, seemed well suited to the roles. I felt like Heyborne was weaker at conveying the main character than Whelan.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
If you want to come to the foregone conclusion that suburbia and the Midwest are deplorable, then this book will accomplish that for you.
Any additional comments?
Just couldn't stand the bland, navel-gazing characters. I couldn't care about the story or the conclusion when they were both so unlikable. I hate people like that in real life, so why would I like them in a book? If they want to kill each other off, then so be it.
