Stepping into a post-apocalyptic fantasy world
Revisado: 02-13-25
I really enjoyed this book, especially after around the half-way point. The intro chapter is a great opening that sets the mood of the story, and the following chapters help set up the situation. Once the party makes it's way out into the ruined world is when things really take off. I kept looking for opportunities to listen because I was hooked. This is a dark and gritty world left desolate by the wars of vain and terrible gods.
The world-building and drops of lore throughout the story really shine and it makes me excited for the next Shattered World installment.
The only thing I was so so on would be the performance. There is no doubt that a good reader would definitely bring the story to the next level, but on the plus side releasing it on audiobook in any way allowed me to listen during my commute, which seems to be the only way I'm able to consume books at this point of my life. So I'm not that bothered.
Can't wait for more!

Beautiful glimpses into the characters and universe of The Expanse
Revisado: 02-13-25
A collection of all the Expanse novellas, Memory's Legion adds so much flavor to the 9 book Expanse series.
Some notables for me:
Reading The Churn right before starting Nemesis Games gave a great insight to Amos, a character that had stood on the edge of the spotlight until then.
Strange Dogs would be an incredible stand-alone sci-fi story without even being connected to the main series.
The Sins of Our Fathers closes our The Expanse series, and it's one that has left an impression on me, drawing me back for a solo listen every so often.

Interesting bones to the story, but not my favorite execution
Revisado: 12-10-24
As some have written, this could have been an interesting longer story. I really liked the premise!
I don't want to beat up on the reader, because they were okay. The problem is that when I am listening to James S. A. Corey, it doesn't feel right if it isn't being read by Jefferson Mays. I imagine I would have enjoyed it more if he had been the reader.
Another reason for my middling feeling on the overall story is that I just finished the James S. A. Corey novella, Livesuit, which I thought was fantastic. I will probably give this a shot again at a later time, but via an ebook.

Great Short Story
Revisado: 08-16-23
Prescient. Raw.
It was to the point without any bloat needed to tell the story.
I enjoyed it immensely.
The narrator did a great job in bringing the characters to life.
Perfect for a solitary drive.
A bite sized story that will stay with me for quite a while, and will be listened to again soon.

Historia
Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.

Sometimes a slog, but what a journey
Revisado: 02-17-17
Some chapters were dryer than others, but overall an incredible listen, especially when you consider that it was written over 200 years ago!
After an overview of the time it begins in depth with Emperor Commodus and goes through the fall of the Eastern Empire to the Turks. That's over 1200 years! Of course it doesn't just look at the Roman Empire, but Gibbon also explains the sparks of areas around the empire that lead to flames within. If you don't mind listening for a long time (it took me about 4 months), this is definitely worth it.
My only gripe is that I didn't have any maps to help me visualize some more obscure areas being talked about (of course there's nothing to be done about that since it's an audiobook). The issue is easily remedied with a pause and Google search.
