I'd had this in my WL for awhile and thought the sample wasn't bad.
Unfortunately, listening for longer than the sample time quickly became painful.
The story is good, the characters are good, and the slow burn in the beginning was good. The steamy scenes were well written and passionate.
There were a few sketch scenes that made me question if I should keep this book. The narrator... wasn't good and really kind of ruined the flow of the story. I managed to get through to the end and decided that I would skip #2.
I'll read the hard copy as other reviewers suggest.

Historia
Salome knows only one way to live - under Prophet David’s rule. In the commune she calls home, Salome knows nothing of life beyond her strict faith, nor of life beyond the Fence - the fence that cages her, keeps her trapped in an endless cycle of misery. A life she believes she is destined to always lead, until a horrific event sets her free. Fleeing the absolute safety of all she has ever known, Salome is thrust into the world outside, a frightening world full of uncertainty and sin; into the protective arms of a person she believed she would never see again.

Good Narration
Revisado: 09-05-23
and that's the only good thing about it.
Premise: A young girl raised imprisoned in a cult and repeatedly sexually abused from the time of childhood, crosses paths and shares a kiss with a small mute boy that grew up to be a homicidal leader of a criminal biker gang. What follows is unlikely escape, an under-developed love "triangle," and a sex scene that takes place in a bathtub mere hours after the male MC supposedly almost dies.
The killer for me was that the female MC is supposed to be this serious trauma victim, from a seriously traumatic background, yet is totally written as if she's an airhead virgin that has never developed any hangouts about physical touch, large men, or sex in general.
I made it just a little over halfway through the book before I couldn't take anymore.
The writing is horrible. The Narration is stellar.

Don't waste your money/credit. I downloaded this as a free title and am glad I didn't actually purchase this book, I would have been so angry. I could not come anywhere close to finishing it. I can't even believe this book got 5K+ positive reviews. It's just utter garbage.

just one thing
Revisado: 09-07-22
For me, the only problem that I had with this book was the cover art. The main character is a biracial girl with brown skin and short blonde hair that grew up on a farm, however on the cover it shows a very pale girl with long blonde hair dressed like a princess. Her facial expression looked bored!
NEWS FLASH:
No one wants to read about spoiled, bored, princesses with magic powers.
If I weren't willing to overlook the cover I would never have downloaded this book. There's absolutely nothing interesting or enticing about the cover art that would actually make you want to read the book (or give you any idea as to how epic the story could be).
Representation matters.
It angers and offends me when I see people with zero color on their skin supposedly portraying people of color. It's absolutely offensive.
The story was good but a little more backstory for these characters, and deeper world building, would have gone a long way towards increasing suspense and urgency. The glimmers of romantic entanglement fell short by the simple fact that the emotions weren't written into the story too much. It's like, they're hinted at and mentioned in reference to others (ex: "He had never seen her so angry" ) but there isn't all that much emotion from the first person. You're not experiencing the emotional process that the characters go through.
All that being said, it was still a good listen, and I listen to it again in the future.

Historia
When William stumbles through a portal in the middle of Antarctica, he'll suddenly find himself in a world unlike any he's ever known. Now, he's surrounded by monster girls, vicious warlords, and everything in between. Worse, his only weapon is a magical branding iron, which seems to have one skill and one skill only, to overwrite slave brands. Thing is, monster girls seem pretty grateful about being freed from the tyranny of their masters, and with each one he brands, the stronger he becomes.

Harem Genre
Revisado: 08-26-22
.... just isn't for me. This book made that apparent. The narration was good and the story itself wasn't too bad. It could certainly have used more fleshing out and character back stories, but overall not bad.
This book did bring me to the realization that I simply cannot get over the idea that these supposedly traumatized females (rescued slaves) would just want to jump into bed with some complete stranger from another world. Even if he IS the one that liberated them.
These books always make it a point to illustrate consent, and mutual respect, etc. but it's done in such a way that fails to address any actual traumas that were suffered. So, how consensual can a sexual act be when the victim is still operating under the trauma of slavery and physical torture? It's just a major sticking point for me. I cannot suspend disbelief in this subgenre of my much-loved Fantasy genre.
But you're into that, then you'll probably really like this one.
I'm glad it was free.

Good, but....
Revisado: 08-21-22
I would give this a 5 star review if not for the narrator and sound editing issues.
The narrator did a passable job in the telling. There were points that I thought perhaps English is not his first language (?) because some words were said with strange inflections. His voice was good and even, though I think he would have done well to pace things a little more engagingly. Example: there were times when a pause would have been called, for or emphasis placed on certain words to make the reading flow better. His pitch was calming when more excitement would have been better.
SPOILER ALERT!!
Lastly, the ending of this trilogy was disappointing. it just ended with "everything faded to black."
like, WTF?
After listening through all those weird skips/repeats/sound distortions that's all we get??
I hope there's a reason for the missing fourth book because that ending was garbage.

Kind of sloppy.
Revisado: 08-06-22
I liked book one and was keen to listen to book 2, but it kinda went wonky and left me confused.
The narrator went from clearly annunciating the name 'Colton' to some lazy, rushed sounding 'Curldon'.
While many of the characters are obviously NOT British, the narrator fails to distinguish these characters by giving them all British accents, which is pretty one dimensional.
I was initially happy that I'd get to read a new steampunk novel and this one started out great. And then there was inflated melodrama. And then there were a series of awesomely bad decisions that disappointed my esteem of these characters .
Around chapter 27/28 this started sounding like an episode from a B-grade TV series. The kind that's good for after dinner brain numbing. The kind that's full of plot holes that you hope will be resolved in the next episode.
I don't know if I'll stay tuned for that one.

Revisado: 06-28-22
This story is amazing. It mixes a little bit of mythology and religion with sci fi.
Super Cool Premise.
Great Performance.
Wonderful characters.
There's a lot of humor and a lot of action.
I was left wanting more!
That being said, this was my first stumble onto this Author.
If you're new like me, take note: this author has apparently written a series of standalone novels that build a world that connects several stories together.
Because they are standalone novels, there's no listed reading order connected to the audible database. I will have to find that information elsewhere because, as I said, I want more.
Such a fun listen, worth every penny and second. Just buy it.

*Currently listening*
He abandons her on a regular, gaslights her, and then drugs her when she crosses the globe to rescue him. And, SOMEHOW, she's the one that apologizes?!?
The male lead is an unequivocal narcissist. Textbook.
The female lead is supposed to be this badass Secret spy, holding it down as a single mom basically, yet as soon as he so much as looks her way she turns into an absolute doormat.
I'm disgusted.
I listened to the prequel novella and really liked the characters, but this just made me angry.

Cool

This book has such a cool premise. I really enjoyed the mystery behind Trinity's memory issues. I kind of always figured "Hive" was behind it, but the where-why-how's are the reason you read/listen to stories, right?
Can't wait until the next book!
