Acerca de esta escucha
A stunning, erotic thriller by the best-selling author of Whiteness of Bones.
Following the gruesome murder of a young woman in her neighborhood, a self-determined woman living in New York City - as if to test the limits of her own safety - propels herself into an impossibly risky sexual liaison. At times stern, at other times patient, at times perceptive, at other times in sad denial, Olive Kitteridge, a retired schoolteacher, deplores the changes in her little town of Crosby, Maine, and in the world at large, but she doesn’t always recognize the changes in those around her: a lounge musician haunted by a past romance; a former student who has lost the will to live; Olive’s own adult child, who feels tyrannized by her irrational sensitivities; and her husband, Henry, who finds his loyalty to his marriage both a blessing and a curse.

In the first scene of this provocative gut-punch of a novel, our unnamed narrator meets a magnetic writer named Ciaran and falls, against her better judgment, completely in his power. After a brief, all-consuming romance, he abruptly rejects her, sending her into a tailspin of jealous obsession and longing. If he ever comes back to her, she resolves to hang onto him and his love at all costs, even if it destroys her.

Historia
Disconcerted and enchanted, the listener follows the narrator of Slowness through a midsummer's night in which two tales of seduction, separated by more than 200 years, interweave and oscillate between the sublime and the comic. Underlying this libertine fantasy is a profound meditation on contemporary life: about the secret bond between slowness and memory, about the connection between our era's desire to forget and the way we have given ourselves over to the demon of speed. And about "dancers" possessed by the passion to be seen, for whom life is merely a perpetual show .

And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell. But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape.

Historia
On April 27, 1997, four contestants make it to the final cell of the Quigley House, a full-contact haunted escape room in Lincoln, Nebraska, made famous for its monstrosities, booby-traps, and ghoulishly costumed actors. If the group can endure these horrors without shouting the safe word, “reprieve,” they’ll win a substantial cash prize - a startling feat accomplished only by one other group in the house’s long history. But before they can complete the challenge, a man breaks into the cell and kills one of the contestants.

really bad narrator
the story and the writing were okay but marred by a truly terrible narrator. the voices for the young black man and the Spanish cop were laughably terrible. I could not take anything in this book seriously with those voices.

Wanted to love this
I saw the movie for the first time recently and enjoyed it so was excited to read/listen to the book and unfortunately was disappointed. First of all: the voice actress is AWFUL. Truly just terrible. Her voices for Cornelius and Rodriguez are just so unbelievably racist (and pretty goofy tbh. Kinda takes any and all tension away from scenes with them) and her attempt at a brogue for Pauline was equally as offensive. This all really takes away from the story (which has some truly harrowing sequences) but in a way, so does the main romance. Maybe it’s because Mark Ruffalo is so naturally charismatic that he makes Molloy seem less awful in the movie but in the book he’s such a disgusting racist, misogynistic pig and I can’t believe someone who we’re lead to believe is intelligent (and who attempts to challenge other racist characters in the book) would ever put up with such a gross dude. Like surely it can’t JUST be lust!? C’mon girl! Stand up!
I will say that in terms of things I DID like, I mostly enjoyed the author’s writing style and I absolutely LOVED the ending. Probably one of the best (and most shocking) endings to a book I’ve read in quite some time. I also like that certain details I was confused about in the movie were explained here (like the significance of the tattoo).

Ugh the narrator
Why did Cornelius voice have to be so ignorant? It was terrible. Most of her men voices were terrible. Next time a narrator that can mimic both genders would come come across better

Painfully Bad Narrator
I couldn't even get through the second chapter. As mentioned by other reviewers, the voice of Cornelius was especially painful.
