Today I am a writer. A few years ago (okay, decades really), I dropped out of seminary to become a young evangelist, then a denominational youth director, a college public relations director, a guest lecturer, an adjunct professor, a pastor in three churches. And now I write. Words for me are like seeds in a farmer’s hand, like paints on an artist’s palette—waiting to be something more. I’ve been entrusted with a handful of seeds to sow wisely and colors to spread across the canvas of our days. To be creative. To tell the story of Jesus through the power of story. To lead his people home. This is why I write. What do I believe? I believe in entertaining storytelling that takes you somewhere exciting, meaningful, and inspiring. I write other things, too, but I love writing suspense thrillers. A word of caution: if you don’t think an exciting story can be written without four-letter words or explicit sexual scenes, you may want to take a pass on me. Or maybe you’ll want to try my books and see what you think. I think writing the way I do is more challenging than if I turned Jesus into a swear word instead of the Son of God he is. Yes, now you know. I am religious. As a kid on the farm, I learned to clean up my mouth the hard way. I’ll tell you about it someday; it’s a funny story. I believe in the deity of Jesus, his virgin birth, his sinless life, his miracles, his death and resurrection, his ascension back to the Father, his promise to return one day, and that he’s never broken a promise. I believe all this. But I don’t write sermons. I write thrillers that invite my readers to identify with characters who are on their own questioning, terrifying, out-of-control, yet still hopeful faith journeys. And on the way, ask themselves, “What if this were me?” The truth? It is.
