Tom Olshanski has been a member of the fire service for 50 years in multiple roles. He has served in both volunteer and career firefighter departments. His last 20 years have been spent as the Director of External Affairs for the United States Fire Administration. Tom has received two-lifetime achievement awards. One was from the Nation Association of Government Communicators, and the second was from the Florida Fire Chiefs Association, Public Information Group. Tom has been an adjunct instructor for numerous courses for FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) since 1989. He has authored many courses and participated in many efforts to prepare community safety personnel for events such as the World Cup Soccer (1994), Super Bowls, Olympics, and National Political Conferences. Tom has also been involved in some large-scale national emergencies, Hurricanes Floyd, Katrina, and Sandy, including numerous other flooding and tornado storms. And including the September 11th NYC response. This short and brief listing makes it easy to see why he has been an often-called-upon conference speaker, seminar presenter, high-level speech writer, and frequent media guest. In 2004, Tom presented the mantra “Everyone Goes Home” to the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation. Tom has committed throughout his career to “Get the RIGHT information, to the RIGHT people, at the RIGHT time so that individuals can make the RIGHT decision to protect and ensure their safety and the safety of loved ones”.
