Sydney Lea was Poet Laureate of Vermont (2011-2015). A recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim, Rockefeller and Fulbright Foundations, Lea founded, and for thirteen years edited, NEW ENGLAND REVIEW. Retired after 43 years of college teaching, he is active in literacy and conservation efforts in northern New England. Lea has published thirteen volumes of poetry (most recently HERE, Four Way Books, NYC, 2019), of which BOOKLIST said "This radiant collection will leave readers counting their blessings past, to come, and most certainly right here." Lea has published the novel A PLACE IN MIND, a selection of literary essays, A HUNDRED HIMALAYAS (University of Michigan Press 2012,and four collections of personal essays, including A NORTH COUNTRY LIFE: TALES OF WOODSMEN, WATERS AND WILDLIFE (Skyhorse Publishing, 2013), of which BOOKLIST said: "There is a soulful quality to his words and a strong conviction that a connected life is one to be admired and emulated. A cross between Thoreau and David James Duncan, Lea is a northern treasure." Since the appearance of A NORTH COUNTRY LIFE, Green Writers Press has published WHAT'S THE STORY? (2015), mini-essays on his life as man and author. The same press has just re-issued GROWING OLD IN POETRY: TWO POETS, TWO LIVES, co-authored with former Delaware Poet Laureate Fleda Brown. In 2020, GWP will present SEEN FROM ALL ANGLES: LYRIC AND EVERYDAY LIFE, a collection of his newspaper columns during his Poet Laureate tenure.
