M.J. Petrin was born in Biddeford, Maine. For the first 10 years, he lived in Camp Ellis Beach, Maine, a small Lobster town where he felt safe and protected living in a quiet community. When he moved to Miami, Florida, with his mother and brother, culture shock hit hard. They lived in Miami and Miami Beach hotel rooms for the first 4 years. As a 10-year-old roaming the streets of downtown Miami, he experienced many things. His greatest lesson was seeing people at their lowest point in life committing unselfish acts to help others. He understood that it doesn’t matter how we look or believe; empathy for our fellow man is the most important gift we can bestow on each other during our short time on this planet. He currently lives with his wife near Baltimore, Maryland, a city that provides him with constant inspiration. Although his first novel series, The Affliction, is considered science fiction, the characters are exposed to the realities of everyday American life. The characters strive to improve their world through empathy, hope, and tolerance. Something we all could use a little of.
