Wongrey began writing in 1967 for The State Newspaper based in Columbia, South Carolina, as their first full-time outdoors writer where he received The Best Newspaper Column Award presented by the South Eastern Outdoors Press Association and The Conservation Communications Award Given by the South Carolina Wildlife Federation and the Sears – Roebuck Foundation for outstanding contributions to the wise use and management of the nations natural resources. He is the recipient of other regional and state writing awards. Wongrey began freelance writing in 1980 and has produced over 1500 nonfiction and fiction articles in 66 different magazines. He is the author of three books published by the Sandlapper Publishing Company located in Orangeburg, South Carolina; Southern Cooking with Fish and Game, Southern Vegetable Cooking and Lowcountry scenes, a coffee table book of coastal South Carolina. The Last Rice Planter, A Time Past, The Guest, A Covey of Tales, "LORD, Just One More Time" and Moments of Glory are published through Kindle direct publishing.
