I’m a gardening enthusiast but that fact is not evidenced by anything in my yard. Since reading Doug Tallamy’s book "Bringing Nature Home," I just love planting things that are useful to bees, butterflies, birds and other pollinators. This notable book changed my philosophy on gardening, and now I judge the importance of a plant by how much wildlife it sustains. So, when I walk through a garden or the woods and see lots of tattered chewed-up leaves on plants, I tip my hat to it and think, “Good job.” "The Queen Who Banished Bugs ~ A Tale of Bees, Butterflies, Ants and Other Pollinators" is my first children's book, and it was definitely the most fun to write. My mother, Mary Ferris Kelly, picked up her paints after a long hiatus to illustrate this whimsical rhyming story that underscores "the creatures that have important roles in getting food to our plates, our cups, our bowls." My first novel, "Making Arrangements," was published by Kindle Press as a Kindle Scout winner. A novel of funerals, flowers, friendships and forgiveness, it features "delightfully sassy writing with characters you'll want to slap," according to one reviewer. Almost 30 years ago, when my husband had open-heart surgery at the age of 34, I changed the way I cooked. The result was "The Gorgeless Gourmet's Cookbook - practically fat-free recipes for super-busy people." That cookbook sold 10,000 copies and resulted in my appearance on the cover of Woman's World magazine. My husband was also on the cover, and he thinks it's ironic that the main character's husband in "Making Arrangements" drops dead of a heart attack. He says that 'after 20 years of taking care of him, I had to have an outlet somewhere!' "Dogs and Love - Stories of Fidelity," shows the emotional connection between dogs and their humans. I wish I could be half the person my dogs think I am. I’m the editor of "The Lookout Mountain Mirror" and "The Signal Mountain Mirror," and my columns have been published in the "Christian Science Monitor," "The Chattanooga News Free Press" and chattanoogan.com, among other publications. One of the best parts of my job at the Mirror is being able to take my dog to work. He loves being a shop dog. I'm Ferris Robinson on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, and if you visit my website, www.ferrisrobinson.com, you can download a free pollinator poster illustrated by Mary Ferris Kelly and learn how to welcome important pollinators to your corner of the world!
