Internationally known Alzheimer’s disease and memory care expert David Troxel is committed to improving the quality of life for persons with dementia and their families. David and coauthor Virginia Bell drew from their experiences with persons with dementia, family members and adult day center care to develop the highly regarded Best Friends Approach™ to Alzheimer’s care. Easy to understand, learn and apply, this comprehensive philosophy is built on a seemingly simple premise: what people living with memory loss need most is a friend – a best friend. David’s professional journey took a personal turn when he became a caregiver and best friend to his mother Dorothy, who passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2009. Through books, presentations, and consulting, David teaches family care partners and professional staff how to understand and fulfill this “Best Friends” role. David holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health from Rutgers Medical School (now UMDNJ/Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). During his 25 years in the field, he has also served as an Executive Board member of the American Public Health Association and a member of the former Ethics Advisory Panel for the U.S. Alzheimer’s Association. David has co-authored five influential books relating to Alzheimer’s disease care as well as staff development and training.
