A.J. Doherty is composed of an unimaginably large collection of atoms. To understand A.J.'s history, we need to go back around thirteen and three-quarter billion years, to the time when the humble hydrogen atom was born. Many of the atoms of A.J.'s body are hydrogen atoms, as he is largely made up of water (H2O). Interestingly however, his other component atoms are only several billion years old having been produced by nuclear fusion in stars. Like in a flowing river, the atoms (ajoms) that constitute A.J. are constantly changing yet he remains the same person, more or less. The ajoms that currently comprise A.J. reside in the U.S.A., with another (slightly smaller) unimaginably large collection of atoms.
