All my life, I have gazed at the Milky Way and wondered what it would be like to walk among those stars and whether there would be a future where such journeys are possible; something beyond the limits of our current awareness of the Cosmos. We live on a planet that has become small enough to travel with hand luggage and I’m sure that one day it will happen to the Galaxy. I was born in London during the Blitz and was evacuated to Lancashire when our house was destroyed during an air raid. After the hostilities were completed and my father returned home, the family decided to remain in the north. My brother and I grew up in post war rural England. Not quite ‘Heartbeat’ country but close enough. Educated at one of the country’s oldest schools, Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, I left at eighteen to join an insurance company. After qualifying professionally and getting married, I was posted overseas. This was initially to the Middle East, Saudi Arabia, just as it was beginning to expand after the increases in the price of oil. After four years I moved to the Far East and was posted variously to South Korea, Sri Lanka/India and Indonesia with short stays in Thailand, Singapore and pre handover Hong Kong. Another move brought us back to the Middle East just in time for two Gulf Wars. I lived in Bahrain for nineteen years and my daughter almost considers it as home. My thirty odd years overseas has given me great insights into many cultures. Not only where they are different but also how they can all be very similar. Hobbies include, but are not limited to, trying to stay ahead of the machinations of my wife and daughter, attempting to foretell the next stages of the Middle East Peace Process and looking forward to the future of space travel that the latest discoveries in astrophysics promise.
