About this listen
Was murder part of the game?
Seventeen-year-old Kat McDonough grew up with theater in her blood - and a penchant for make-believe. More than a decade older, Seth Mazzaglia was well-known in the community theater circle of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He, too, had a rich inner life - and he soon had Kat convinced that they were soul mates.
To intensify their bond, Seth lured Kat into a world of violent sex and role-playing, where she was his slave. But even that wasn't enough to satisfy his ravenous appetites. Enter Lizzi Marriott, the new girl in town. And when she accepts an invitation to Kat and Seth's apartment, she will never be seen again....

During it, she told Sandy to drop the restraining order and get back together with Ken. Pen was never seen again. One man stood to gain from Pen’s disappearance: Ken Carpenter. But evidence was bleak: no blood, no DNA, no body. Until detectives found notes hidden....

Wealthy, beautiful, and brilliant, Shele Danishefsky had fulfillment at her fingertips. Having conquered Wall Street, she was eager to build a family with her much younger husband, promising Ivy League graduate Rod Covlin. But when his hidden vices surfaced, marital harmony gave way to a merciless divorce. On October 23, 1989, affluent businessman Charles Stuart made a frantic 911 call from his car to report that he and his seven-months-pregnant wife, Carol, a lawyer, had been robbed and shot by a Black male in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston. By the time police arrived, Carol was dead, and the baby was soon lost as well. The attack incited a furor during a time of heightened racial tension in the community. Even more appalling, while the injuries were real, Stuart’s story was a hoax: He was the true killer.

On June 9, 2008, the butchered body of Travis Alexander was found in his Mesa, Arizona, home. The grisly nature of his death made instant headlines: With 29 knife wounds, his throat slit, and a gunshot to the head, Travis was left to die. The prime suspect in the case was Alexander's ex-girlfriend, the attractive and soft-spoken Jodi Arias. Though Arias initially said that she was nowhere near the scene of crime, little about this case was as it seemed, and before long she had been caught lying to police. As the investigation progressed, her lies evolved multiple times before finally resting on an appalling claim: She had killed Travis in self-defense.

Rachel Newhouse disappeared on the night of November 12, 1998. Only months later, in the same town, Aundria Crawford lost her life in an act of unimaginable violence. As authorities worked to find clues, parole officer David Zaragoza paid a routine visit to one of his charges - Rex Allan Krebs, a violent serial rapist who'd served only 10 years of a 20-year sentence. After sending Krebs back to jail for violating his parole, Zaragoza found a key chain belonging to one of the victims. An intensive search led to the gruesome discovery of buried remains near Krebs' secluded cabin.

Story
On an August night in 1986, Jennifer Levin left a Manhattan bar with Robert Chambers. The next morning, her strangled, battered body was found in Central Park. Linda Wolfe goes beyond the headlines and media hype to recreate a story of a teenager whose immigrant mother was determined to make a better life for her son, a petty thief and drug user who'd been expelled from the best schools. Wasted powerfully depicts the freewheeling 1980s society that spawned a generation steeped in violence and the fatal impulses that drove Robert Chambers to kill.

Story
To all appearances, Dennis Rader was a model citizen in the small town of Park City, Kansas, where he had lived with his family almost his entire life. He was a town compliance officer, a former Boy Scout leader, the president of his church congregation, and a seemingly ordinary father and husband. But Rader's average life belied the existence of his dark, sadistic other self: he was the BTK serial killer.

Story
It’s a chilling reality that homicide investigators know all too well: The last face most murder victims see is not that of a stranger, but of someone familiar. Whether only an acquaintance or a trusted intimate, such killers share a common trait that triggers the downward spiral toward death for someone close to them: They are masters at hiding who they really are. Their clever masks let them appear safe, kind, and truthful. They are anything but - and almost no one can detect the murderous impulses buried deep in their psyches.

Story
On June 7, 1998, James Byrd, Jr., a 49-year-old black man, was dragged to his death while chained to the back of a pickup truck driven by three young white men. It happened just outside of Jasper, a sleepy East Texas logging town that, within 24 hours of the discovery of the murder, would be inextricably linked in the nation's imagination to an exceptionally brutal, modern-day lynching. In this superbly written examination of the murder and its aftermath, award-winning journalist Joyce King brings us on a journey that begins at the crime scene.

Excellent new true crime material
This was my first time reading these authors, and I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised by Dark Heart. Like many others, I was already somewhat familiar with the case. I'm a huge 'audi-holic' and an even bigger true crime fan, so I really enjoyed the way the narrative was presented in a thorough, but concise manner. The authors did an excellent job balancing the razor-sharp line between focusing on the defendants, while not losing sight of the victim's story.
The narration was very smooth and comfortable to listen to. I only gave 4 stars here because there are some narrators out there that earn the 5th star imo. Nevertheless I like Paul Costanzo, and hope to hear more from him.
Overall I give Dark Heart 5 stars because there are a shortage of great new true crime books in print and audio formats such as this, and this story was well told and it's clear that the authors did their research. Despite the fact that they were not able to obtain more participation from Lizzy's family, they made an effort to give them a voice. It give us a glimpse into her horrific final moments as well as the dark and twisted world of Cat and Seth. If you enjoy a solid true crime story with suspense, real emotion, and a bit of the bizarre then you will enjoy Dark Heart. I look forward to more titles from these two!
I WISH this audio book was given to me for free in return for an honest review!

Excellent mystery with lots of twists and turns
Enthusiastic thumbs up!! Such a tragic murder, so sorry to Lizzi's family. I wish we learned more about the victim, but I also found Kat's story fascinating. I really appreciated Rebecca and Kevin's structure and story telling. Didn't know anything about the case, so I was surprised throughout. Narrator is fantastic

This was decent
I prefer my true crime to be verbatim quotes that are told from interrogation rooms and court transcripts rather then summary after summary of the events which can leave room for Misinterpretation. But in whole, it was not terrible.

Great, but not safe for work!
I really enjoyed this book. The character development was excellent and I actually wish the book had been longer. I felt like I knew the characters and I wanted to know more. The authors were very respectful to the victim's family and I appreciated how the difficult subject was handled. I do however feel like there is a lot more to this story and I will be mining the internet for more information. Don't listen to this one around children; the details are lurid and not suitable for all ages.

Sickest content.
This book is gratuitously sexual. It’s all disgusting uninteresting (except to perverts) and wildly unnecessary.
It’s aiming to be 50 shades for Crime readers. It’s childish and disgusting. Doesn’t interest me at all that they pretended to have multiple personalities in sex. It’s nonsense.
