About this listen

Lieutenant Alex Cruz eats, sleeps and breathes law enforcement. He's tough and brusque, and cops and criminals alike tremble before him. And that's the way he likes it. Until he meets Caitlin Summers - and decides he wants her trembling beneath him. The beautiful scholar is doing dissertation research in his cop shop, and seriously messing with his head. His self-imposed sexual abstinence comes to a screeching halt in Caitlin's ratty hotel room and dies a permanent death in his bed…and his kitchen…and his living room. Caitlin is also intelligent and funny, kind and generous, her smile a burst of warmth in his cold, austere life. And that scares the crap out of him. With his head and heart fighting a battle of wills, Alex can barely concentrate on work. And that's too bad - because his dangerous job and his newfound love are about to clash in the worst way possible.

Editorial reviews

A Fine Specimen hits all the highlights of a characteristic "erotic romance suspense" by Lisa Marie Rice. It has a hot alpha male (police lieutenant Alex Cruz), a beautiful and irresistible woman (scholar Caitlin Summers), and plenty of sparks (only a few of them from guns). The novel is a reworking of Taming Nick, which was written under Rice's other penname, Elizabeth Jennings. The author subsequently spiced it up with even more police language and lovemaking, and the changes will delight listeners.

Stage and audiobook actress Piper Goodeve gives a lyrical and beautifully paced performance, even when she's voicing hardened cops who can't speak without profanity. Her peripheral characters are especially well-developed.

I enjoyed the male female dynamic

This story is not only hit but shows things from a real world prospective. Somethings men and women do everyday not communicate

Great story and characters!

I really enjoyed this audiobook! The author is one of my favorites and in this story she added some humorous moments. The heroine Caitlyn is a nerdy but gorgeous doctoral student who has been given permission by the chief of police to shadow the second in command. Alex is a grouchy officer who is very focused on bringing down a local mafia kingpin. To do this he has to find and catch his informant, who is hiding from the police.
Caitlyn is horribly klutzy and looks much younger than her age of 26. When she repeatedly spills things ( usually in his lap) Alex grudgingly decides he has a responsibility to take care of her for his friend who gave her the permission. He will make sure he feeds her, he decides. Only the Caitlyn who greets him for their dinner date isn’t the same little klutz he thought she was.
I don’t want to give away the story, but it’s sexy and hot, sweet and a little sad, but there is a happy ending. Narration was excellent.

Pretty good until the end.

I was enjoying this story, even though the narrator was not great. I even had to laugh at some of the scenes, especially apartment hunting. Then, just before the ending, the hero was emotionally cruel. It was disturbing. Just after that, the exciting ending was a quick blip. Done! Leaving me more disturbed by that one scene, than pleased by the whole story. Sigh.

Drawn out & Boring

I could not finish. I liked it in the beginning . I liked Alex at first with his super alpha male personality. I liked that he was foul mouth and very protective. I didn't like how all he wanted from Caitlin was to end his sex drought. I couldn't like Caitlin. Absent-minded academic. She just seemed so naive and boring. The first 8 hours were them going back and forth having sex and arguing. The inner dialog ( Him...why does she want to move out of my house? I don't want to ask her to stay but I want her to. Her...I want to stay but I need to leave to protect my heart since he won't ask me to stay) drove me crazy. I had less than 1 hr 30 mins. left and I'm assuming the danger to her was in that part but I couldn't stick it out.

I've read other books by this author and loved them. This one was just boring and drawn out. Full of filler and fluff. Probably could have been better if it was 6 hrs. or less.
