Arthur Conan Doyle's 1887 novella introduced the world to Sherlock Holmes, the brilliant consulting detective, as portrayed through the eyes of his friend and colleague Dr. John Watson, a retired army physician. In A Study in Scarlet, Holmes and Watson take on their first case together, involving a body discovered in an abandoned London house with a bloody message scrawled on the wall above.

The Greek god Hermes has left Olympus in search of a beautiful nymph. He comes across Lamia, a woman trapped in the form of a snake, who promises to reveal the nymph to him if he, in exchange, restores her human form so she may seek the love of Lycius, a youth of Corinth.

Hedda and George Tesman have just returned from their six-month honeymoon tour of the Tyrol. George, a studious and somewhat dull academic has spent most of the time continuing his research. Hedda, the daughter of the celebrated, aristocratic General Gabler, recently deceased, has been accustomed to the finer things in life. She is already bored in her marriage and diverts herself with her father's pistols and the attentions of family friend, Judge Brack.

Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel, first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. A work of considerable power and intensity set in the Yorkshire moors in the late 18th century - the bleak and wild moorland often reflected in the natures of the characters. Unsettling at times, the novel is a heady mix of gritty realism, romance, Gothic horror, and tragedy.

"The Eve of St. Agnes" was written in January 1819 and first published in 1820. It is a Romantic Narrative poem written in 42 Spenserian stanzas. John Keats based his poem on the superstition that a girl could see her future husband in a dream if she performed certain rites on the eve of the feast of St. Agnes (the patron saint of virgins who died a martyr in 4th century Rome.) The eve falls on January 20th; the feast day on the 21st.

The Frozen Deep was originally written as a play by Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens. Isabella, or the Pot of Basil is a Romantic narrative poem of 63 stanzas. Written in 1818 and first published in 1820, it is adapted from a story in Giovanni Boccaccio's Decameron. It tells the tragic tale of Isabella and her love for Lorenzo, an employee of her two brothers. John Keats (1795-1821) was one of the foremost English Romantic poets. Despite his early death from tuberculosis at the age of 25 he had a considerable poetic output.
