Als Ben Cartwright in sein elterliches Heim zurückkehrt, um den Tod seines Vaters zu betrauern, stößt er zufällig auf eine Reihe von kryptischen Briefen zwischen Arthur Conan Doyle und seinem Ur-Urgroßvater, welcher 1908 während einer Dschungelexpedition im Amazonas spurlos verschwand. Dieser Briefwechsel lässt den unglaublichen Schluss zu, dass die Expeditionen seines Ahnen dem berühmten Autor als Basis für seine fantastische Geschichte über eine vergessene Welt voller urzeitlicher Lebewesen diente.

Die Legende von Lemuria, der geheimnisvollen Insel, mit all ihren Wundern und Gefahren erwies sich als überaus real.
