  • Moves to Practice Outside of the Jiu Jitsu Gym | You-Jitsu #24
    Feb 23 2023

There are more than 3 moves BJJ players can practice outside of class, but these are 3 that I think White Belts should focus on.

    1. Bridging
    2. Shrimping
    3. Sprawling

*Note: You-Jitsu is moving to the 'KEV Talks Podacast' feed starting 3/9/2023. Follow me there at https://blubrry.com/peopleprocessprogress/

  • Establish the Position, Before the Submission | You-Jitsu #23
    Feb 17 2023

If you're new, you probably don't know a lot of submissions. That's ok. But don't try some YouTube BJJ magic on someone from 2-3 feet away. Instead, pass their guard, get into side control or mount, then go for a submission.

In other words, "Position before submission."

  • Dealing with Spazzy Training Partners | You-Jitsu #22
    Feb 9 2023

Have you slapped hands, bumped fists, and realized your training partner was already spazzing out before the roll? In this episode, I share three tips on how to keep your distance and help chill spazzy training partners out.

    1. Collar grips (Gi) / Hand to head (No Gi)
    2. Keep feet between you and them
    3. Let them pass, then sweep and cook them with pressure

BONUS: Share the culture of how rolls should happen in BJJ

  • Top 3 Escapes Every BJJ White Belt Should Know | You-Jitsu #20
    Jan 25 2023

In 20. Top 3 Escapes Every BJJ White Belt Should Know, I cover the basic concepts of three escapes I see BJJ White Belts struggle with.

    1. Frame and shrimp out of side control
    2. Trap and roll out of the mount
    3. Arm control and back to the floor out of the back mount

  • Build a Solid Base in Jiu Jitsu | You-Jitsu #19
    Jan 19 2023

"Triangles are strong because of their inherent structural characteristics. The corner angles of a triangle cannot change without an accompanying change in the length of the edge. Therefore, an edge must collapse to change a triangle's shape."

In this episode, I share the importance of building a strong base as a White Belt. We do this when in someone's closed guard with good posture, hands on our opponent's hip bones, and by sitting on our active feet (balls of foot). We can also build triangle-like solid, strong shapes with our frames when someone is mounted on us or has us in side control.

Key takeaway: Don't just fall over because you are new
