  • Jack speaks to Josh Seiter
    Nov 6 2024

Why did Josh Seiter do what he did?

Jack has always read Josh being described as a 'former Bachelorette star’ and always thought this was a little unfair: who is he? Is he "an attention seeking troll who is mocking trans people. All he has ever done has been to get attention and make money off of it"?

Or, is there more to the man?

    Listen to the conversation, now!

    Further notes

    • The sex offender (Adam Graham) was said to have been given an apology after being called 'son' by a female prison officer. Adam Graham claims prison staff treat trans women 'like men'.
    • In October 2022, a Freedom of Information request obtained by The Times showed that Cornton Vale had a transgender prison population of 16, half of whom had begun the transitioning process following their conviction. At one point, that population included Katie Dolatowski, a convicted child-sex offender who spent time there in 2022 after breaching a restriction of liberty order.

    Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill

    • Key changes include removing the requirement for a medical diagnosis, instead allowing individuals to self-declare their gender. Applicants would need to meet criteria around residency and age, with the minimum age for application being lowered from 18 to 16. The bill also shortens the required time that individuals must live in their acquired gender to three months (or six months for 16- and 17-year-olds), followed by a three-month reflection period to ensure the decision is made with due consideration.

    The Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre

    • ERCC's trans-inclusionary policy led to J. K. Rowling establishing Beira's Place, a support and counselling service for women who are survivors of sexual violence in Edinburgh which does not employ or serve transgender women.
    • Mridul Machindra Wadhwa (born 1978, a transgender woman) is an Indian-born Scottish women's rights and anti-domestic violence campaigner. She is also a trans-activist. She previously served as Chief Executive Officer of Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. In September 2024, Wadhwa resigned from the ERCC following a review commissioned by Rape Crisis Scotland. The review found 93 percent of survivors felt hopeful about their future after their time with the ERCC. It noted only 2 instances of survivors avoiding the ERCC as a result of their policies
    • In May 2024, an employment tribunal gave a decision in favour of Roz Adams, who was constructively dismissed by Edinburgh Rape Crisis Centre. The tribunal found Adams, who identifies as a "sex realist", had been unfairly targeted due to her gender-critical belief that service users should be able to specify the sex of their support staff.

    The Cass Report

    • Evidence on puberty blockers: The report found that the evidence on puberty blockers is insufficient, but also acknowledges their efficacy for some trans young people. The report recommends more evidence be gathered through compulsory medical trials.
    • Long-term outcomes: The report found that there is no good evidence on the long-term outcomes of interventions to manage gender-related distress.
    • Clinical care: The report recommends that children and young people with gender incongruence or dysphoria receive the same standards of clinical care, assessment, and treatment.
    • Quality improvement and research infrastructure: The report recommends quality improvement and research infrastructure to strengthen the evidence base underpinning care.
