Today’s guest, AmiLynne Carroll, was one of the older of 15 children in her family. Family life was regimented, prompt, and moving quickly based on the information available. This created the foundation for which she lived her life for the 35 years until things began to shift. She could no longer ignore that her lifestyle was based on the beliefs of others and in a very dark moment, she decided to really look into herself and find out what her own beliefs were.

Today’s guest, Ryan Penley, author of Sober to Super and host of the podcast The Next Fix, goes into detail with me about his rough start, distant but well intentioned grandparents who raised him and how the warning signs of additive behaviors manifested in his early teens. His path takes him into the vipers den and didn’t’ immediately chew him up but eventually led him to a coma, homelessness and being put in a psyche ward several times. He makes the decision to get sober and after a few attempts was successful to the point where his life looks completely different now as a husband and father. It is a great story of overcoming obstacles and now he gives back to others from a place of understanding and empathy with strong boundaries.

He dove into some risky behaviors, but they eventually corrected themselves and not only did he get to be a helicopter pilot, he also found his way to a leadership role to encourage and support those in the Boulder area through the ROTC program. When his 23 year journey ended, he found him self with debilitating nerve pain and it was connected to his emotions about the ending but it took him some time to put that together.
