  • Summary

  • It's the week before Easter in 1971, and at the local power plant in rural Lapland, the workers are heading out for the morning shift. But something's different - a safe has been robbed, and no one knows how. In Vietas, award-winning crime author Jenny Rogneby explores the case of the missing money, why it was so badly handled and why, to this day, it remains unsolved.

This three-part true crime series is different: it features waterfalls and reindeers, but no murders. It a tale of a crime executed in a spectacularly specific way, but also of a small Swedish town in the middle of nowhere, where everybody and nobody is a suspect.

  • Ep. 1: A Hole in the Floor
    Jul 28 2020

In the first episode, we travel far up into the mountains of Lapland, to take a trip down memory lane. Over 600 workers were staying in barracks around a power plant. What at first seemed like a normal day on the job soon turns into a crime scene like no other. The office safe has been robbed of all paychecks, and every single worker is a potential suspect.

  • Ep. 2: Problems with the Investigation
    Jul 28 2020

When the police arrive at the scene of the crime, they’re left speechless. The levels of skill and planning involved are remarkable, and by reading documents previously never seen by anyone outside of the police force, Jenny Rogneby takes us one step closer to figuring out what happened on that fateful night in 1971.

  • Ep. 3: Ten Years of Dead Ends
    Jul 28 2020

The case was open for 10 years. From the beginning, the most pressing question was whether or not it was an inside job. The police reached out to the public and were flooded with leads; some helpful, some not. In this final episode of the series, a phone call to the person ‘everyone knows committed the crime’ is the last chance to get answers.

The case was open for 10 years and in total the investigation spanned to over 6000 pages. Lead after lead, after lead that never led to a clear conclusion. There were two options, either it was a inside job - or someone from the outside. Against all logic, the police put down a lot of resources to track down an outsider. But how could they miss the most obvious, logical route? And why has nobody ever been caught?

Dullest Heist Title I've Ever Heard

This story sounds interesting. The author narrates and that is a mistake for this title. Her dull and monotonous tone simply bores you. The gentleman doing the translations would've been a much better narrator, and this would've been far more interesting. Skip it and listen to Heists with Michael Caine and the Canadian Heists titles, those are far more interesting and entertaining.

Intriguing Story

The story is highly intriguing, but the performance is made awkward by the mispronunciations of some English words and phrases by the Swedish narrator (e.g., repeatedly saying "coup" like "coop" instead of "coo"). Overall, an interesting podcast that requires careful attention on the part of the listener. 4/5 stars

Achingly dull

The narrator is awful and flat. The pacing of the story is plodding. And from the beginning they give you no reason to care about what's coming next. There are too many great podcasts out there to waste your time with mediocrity like this.
