To move forward in our study of heaven and hell, we need to look at Christ's death and resurrection. This presumes there was a Jesus who lived, of which there is abundant secular proof. Christ was the substitute offering that allows us to go to heaven, but we get a glimpse of hell on earth at Christ's death. To understand what "hell" means in the New Testament, we have to look at the original Greek words, two of which are "Gehenna" and "Hades." "Gehenna" refers to a place of punishment and perpetual burning, while "Hades" refers to the unseen world, not innately a place of punishment.
