    July, the time of fireworks and celebration of a country's birth, but the land was here long before anyone had called it a name.

    Walter and his friends are trying to stave of the boredom of the long Summer Holidays when they find something buried on the beach. It turns out to be nothing but his friend Thomas thinks he knows where real treasure may be buried.

    Off they go to the woods, and find things that have been buried for a very long time.

    But Walter likes the thrill of Jack's schemes and 'activities', plus doing things with Jack not only gave him an excitement burst he'd not had before, it made others at school view him differently.

    Though how far would Walter go with Jack, how far was he willing to prove that the friendship was a real one?

    March, a time of hard ground and the promise of spring, of a thawing landscape and new growth beneath the surface. And as far as nine year Walter is concerned, isn't this what spring is like the whole world over?

    But his Father brings home a book about spring in the South of France, and a time when his Dad went ashore when coming home from overseas. His Dad's excitement and nostalgia infect Walter so much, he wants his Dad to see the colors of France again.

    Though why is his mother so against it, so opposed to Walter's wishes? And anyway, where would Walter get flowers this time of year, near Huron City?

    But Walter doesn't give up, and not even he could have known about the consequences of his actions, or maybe he could.

    Uncle Walter's Year of Wonder. Near Lake Huron, in the Grey Water Area, Uncle Water recalls growing up in the 70's, before computers, before unsocial media, and before people forgot what was important.

    February brings a lot of snow in the Kitten Sate. Lakeshore effect snow causes drifts that make getting out and about difficult, especially in the country side.

    And the deep snow brings memories of snowball fights, and of being the youngest sibling, the youngest cousin, and an all round target for those who are simply glad that they are no longer the smallest in the group.

    Then there's Henry, Walter's older brother, who should be looking out for Walter. But Henry is a much older teenager, with all the peer pressure that age brings, plus the tug of leaving the family home not far away to think about.

    And when Walter is left to the mercy of Henry's friend Carl Stadler, someone everyone is scared of, Walter's relationship with his brother is never the same again.

    January is cold in The Kitten State. The wind sweeps brutally across the landscape as Walter remembers Annie, an energetic, confident and amazing girl some two and half years older than the 11 year old Walter.

    Annie wants to go skating with Walter and his sister Jackie. Trouble is, Annie wants to go to Decker's Mill. Walter's been to Decker's Mill, and it ain't a good place. But no one listens to Walter. He's the youngest, used to keeping quiet even when he knows what's what, as what does the youngest kid know?

    Trouble is, all kids are young, without experience, with only their belief in their own invincibility to guide them through their days.

    And as a small group of kids join them in their journey to skate at Decker's Mill, only Walter, the youngest, is not convinced of Annie's invincibility in the way the other kids want her to be.
