  • Ep. 13 - How To Get Your Emotional Needs Met
    Oct 9 2022

This week we discuss emotional needs and whether it’s possible to meet your own, how to communicate what you need and where these needs could be met in all aspects of life.

What are 3 basic emotional needs?

    1. How do you think you go about getting your emotional needs met?
    2. How do I respond to others?  Is it usually passive, aggressive or assertive?
    3. Do I often deny I have needs?  Do I put others’ needs above my own?
    4. Do I demand my needs be met by everyone?  Do I feel I have the right to have my needs met?
    5. Do I express my needs in honest, open ways?  How can I improve this?

The SDT (self-determination theory) reduces basic human needs down to just three: autonomy, competence and relatedness: autonomy is defined as the desire to self-organise behaviour and experience; competence means having an impact on and attaining valued outcomes; relatedness is the desire to feel connected to others, to give love and care

"To hope that another human can meet our needs is asking too much of anyone."

Romanoff suggests being alert to when you tend to reach out for others to fulfill your needs. For many people, this might be when you are bored, lonely, or anxious or otherwise need to regulate your emotions.

"Once you identify your triggers, you can begin to reduce your dependence on others in these situations," says Romanoff. "If you delay reaching out, you could strengthen your own internal resources to process difficult emotions, for example by journaling, exercising, taking a warm shower, or another relaxing activity."

  • Ep. 12 - Status Syndrome - Why Do We Buy Designer?
    Sep 18 2022

There’s a lot more we could talk about on this subject but let’s do a sort of introduction as to why we buy designer items and what they mean or don’t mean to us.

    • Repeated studies have shown that by buying luxury items, consumers are able to transport themselves to a place of higher self-esteem, they get a sense of belonging to an exclusive club, they might even feel that they’ve accomplished something by spending thousands on a new handbag.
    •  At the heart of it all, stuff makes us feel good, and we all love feeling good. Many human behaviors are rewarded with pleasurable feelings (caused by the chemical dopamine). Buying stuff can release those same pleasure chemicals, and for many of us, our natural addiction to feeling good can hence be easily satisfied by buying something.
    • Researchers at Yale have determined that this quest for authenticity develops early in childhood. A study that tried to convince children that a cloning machine had produced their favorite toy found that most children refused to accept the duplicate as identical. It turns out that the sentimentality of the item—the memory or feeling that comes from having purchased a genuine luxury good—is part of the reason that we seek authenticity.

  • Ep. 11 - Is University For Everyone?
    Sep 11 2022

It’s hard (and probably not ethical) to measure someone’s future level of success by whether they go to university or not, but what are your opinions on it? Do you think kids should be encouraged or coaxed into going to university or should they have time to work and figure out a life path first?

Send us your opinions on Instagram!

    Statistics:

In 2019−20, mature students (aged 21 and over) accounted for 57.5% of the student population at UUK member institutions. This includes 44.3% of students studying for their first undergraduate degree. Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) students accounted for 25.1% of students living permanently in the UK.

Key fact: There was a significant increase in the proportion of HE student qualifiers obtaining a first class degree, from 28% in 2018/19 to 35% in 2019/20. Qualifiers obtaining a first class degree increased by 1% in 2020/21.

In 2019–20, four fifths of students were studying full-time. 69.2% of students were studying for a first degree either full or part time, and a quarter (25.5%) were postgraduates.

In 2020, median graduate salaries were £10,000 higher in England than non-graduate salaries.

In 2019−20, 15.8% of undergraduate students and 40.5% of postgraduate students at UUK member institutions were from outside the UK.

In 2019−20, nearly half of total expenditure was spent directly on teaching and research activities.

In 2019−20, there were 2,413,155 students at UUK member institutions; an increase of 3.1% compared to 2018−19. Of these students:

    • 79.6% studied full time
    • 74.5% were undergraduates
    • 5.8% were from EU countries
    • 16.3% were from other non-EU countries
    • 56.9% were females
    • 59.9% were mature students (aged 21 and over)

In 2019-20, UUK members awarded 761,215 qualifications.

    • 61% were undergraduate qualifications and 39% were postgraduate
    • 80% of graduates were in employment or unpaid work 15 months after graduation
    • 19% of graduates were in further study
    • Median salaries for graduates were £9,500 higher than non-graduates

5.3% of non-graduates were unemployed compared to 3.7% of graduates
