This upbringing instilled in him a strong sense of community service and public engagement from an early age. He attended Butte Public Schools and graduated from Butte High School in 1982.Walz pursued higher education at Chadron State College in Nebraska, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in social science education in 1989. He later expanded his academic credentials by obtaining a Master's degree in educational leadership from Minnesota State University, Mankato, in 2001.Following his undergraduate studies, Walz enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 1981 and served for 24 years. His military service included a deployment to Italy in support of Operation Endure Freedom in 2003. Walz rose to the rank of Command Sergeant Major, the highest enlisted rank in the Army National Guard.
