Thoughts From a Mountain by Craig M. Lanyon

  • Summary

  • I'm Craig Michael Lanyon. I was born in Sandringham, Victoria, in 1975. So did my parents. After a year in Victoria, my parents relocate to her family estate. I'm from a farming family. My dad was a city boy, so farming the property with his in-laws must have been a change. After a few years, he decided to establish his own nursery since he wasn't satisfied with the hard labor on the farm. I grew up on a farm and helped my parents in the nursery as a kid. I played various sports as a kid, but AFL was my favorite. I attended to Mt. Cotton State School, established in 1874. Went to Cleveland High School and left in 10th grade to work on the farm with my grandparents and the nursery with my parents. I shattered my leg playing Australian rules football at 17 years old. Played on land the next year. The nursery was failing, so I worked part-time jobs. The next year, while playing football, I ripped my spleen and lost 3 liters of blood. On the operating table, when the morfene kicked in for the pain, I wondered, "Is this the last thing I'm going to see?" When will I see my family, a sunset, stars, or the world? So I recited "the Lord's prayer" and "This night when I lie down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I should die before I rise, I pray the Lord my soul to take." The following year I gave myself another opportunity to play the AFL. I did well for a few years while the nursery struggled. I obtained a bar job at my club. My enthusiasm for football was waning, so I drove to Cairns along Queensland's east coast. Got a bar job there, then returned home. It battled drought etc. Grandparents got me a trip to London to see how the other half lives. When I came, I had a two-year employment visa and 300 pounds cash. I got a job in a tavern near Gatwick the next day and was assistant manager in a week. Loved it but wanted to play football. So I went to the nursery. My younger siblings are 18 months and 5 years. Football was over once I damaged my knee. Since I had 6 months remaining on my work visa and the nursery wasn't paying my brother enough, I urged him to travel to London with me. When I asked my previous supervisor for a job for my brother and myself, he stated six months is too long. I met a wonderful woman, and she came back with me to uni (extremely costly for her parents) after 4 years. I stayed on the farm, but she returned to London. Part-time job at the football club is where I met my future wife. We split as friends after 10 years because she had 2 little children and money was tight. When I went back to the farm, I published my poems. I started writing poems at age 10. Finally, the nursery and farm received rain. I have many poetry I've preserved in journals throughout the years. I still adore writing since it helps me organize my thoughts no matter my mood. God bless, smile
