    Mar 25 2025

Content Warning: This episode includes mentions of miscarriage, pregnancy loss, pregnancy complications, traumatic birth experiences, and other potentially disturbing topics related to childbirth, pregnancy, and the postpartum period.

In Act 3 of our pregnancy series, we arrive at the big moment: childbirth. We begin the episode with a closer look at one of the most commonly performed surgeries around the world: the cesarean section. Exploring how this procedure went from rare to everywhere reveals some of the larger medical trends shaping the childbirth experience in nuanced ways. Then, we take a step back to ask “what is actually happening in labor?” Journeying through the labor and delivery process contraction by contraction gives us the opportunity to examine what is happening in our bodies during this crucial time and how things might not go according to plan.

The second episode in our pregnancy series kicks off with a tribute to one of the most amazing organs: the placenta. We trace the evolutionary origins of the human placenta and examine how this organ allows for such an intimate and delicately balanced relationship between mother and fetus, as well as what can happen if that balance is disrupted. We then turn towards the pregnant person, exploring the broad physiological changes that happen body system by body system throughout pregnancy. Why do you pee so much? Feel nauseous? Have high blood pressure? We get into it all.

Infectious podcast!

There’s nothing quite like getting to deep dive into all these infectious diseases without having to do any of the challenging research. Thanks for sharing your hard work, Erin and Erin!

Well Rounded Excellence

So far I am a fan of the Erin and Erin. It’s fun to listen to the banter and wealth of information. They both sound like empathetic and wonderfully intelligent women. I have started from the first episode and am working my way up. Thank you for the entertaining education.

Fascinating and Funny

(long time listener on a different platform)
This podcast might just be my #1 favorite! Very well researched, with detailed explanations of biological mechanisms and processes as well as great storytelling when it comes to the historical side of things. I love the genuine enthusiasm with which the Erins talk about all these horrible pathogens (because yes, they ARE FASCINATING) and the occasional anger about the mistreatment of people in the name of medicine over the course of its history.

My favorite podcast

I love this fun and informative pod! I always learn a lot about biology and history. The narrators ("the Erin's," since they're both named Erin) are funny and thoughtful.

This is a great podcast! Educational and Sassy

These two women are smart, funny and I've learned so much about topics I'm not sure I wanted to know.. with their fascinating focus on Poop, Diseases, Poison, and basically everything under the sun, clearly these two are scientists and their repartee is hilarious. I'm going to be binging all 150 episodes now!
