The importance of healthy nursing home food

  • Summary

  • February is American Heart Month, a time to focus on heart health, and what better way to do that than through nutritious meals? Chanee Oginni, chef and director of food services at Chalet Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, stopped by the Daybreak kitchen to share a winning recipe designed to nourish both body and soul.

Oginni, who recently won a national competition for her heart-healthy stir-fry recipe, emphasized the importance of portion control and balanced ingredients. “You want to have about three to four ounces of protein, more vegetables, and fewer carbs and fats. Grilling and sautéing are great options for keeping meals nutritious.”

Beyond the kitchen, Oginni plays a vital role in ensuring Chalet Rehabilitation’s residents have access to healthy, delicious meals. “Eating is one of the few choices they get each day, and it’s an opportunity for them to connect and enjoy their time together,” she said.

Trey Fitzwater, who joined Oginni in the kitchen, highlighted how meals contribute to overall wellness. “It’s the most important thing our residents do three times a day. Good food helps with recovery, and dining together creates a sense of community.”

For those looking to make heart-healthy choices, Oginni encourages simple swaps like grilling instead of frying and incorporating more vegetables into meals. “Put love into your food,” she said. “It makes all the difference.”
